‘Breakfast in Bed’ by Mary Cassatt, 1897. Exhibition: Mary Cassatt - After Impressionism. Art Institute of Chicago, Oct 2026.
Oil painting of a mother calmly embracing a curly haired, rosy cheeked toddler. Both are in white bed clothes, reclining against a large white pillow in bed. The child looks off to the side while the mother gazes at the child.

‘Flow’ is a beautiful film, but the first 30 minutes of all the animals in jeopardy was tough for me to watch. I have seen it several times, but the initial anxiousness returns with every viewing.

I’ve been reading the OMW trilogy in German. It translates well and is full of lovely long words like ‘Mikrosekundenintervallen’, ‘Planetenoberfläche’ and ‘Verteidigungssystemen’. (microsecond intervals, planet surface, defense systems)
Book cover of Old Man’s War trilogy in German “Krieg der Klone”

The Caligula episodes with John Hurt were a series highpoint. To see Hurt pivot to “The Elephant Man” a few years later was amazing. His Caligula had not a shred of humanity, but Hurt was able to show Merrick’s gentle soul through all the makeup. I used “TouchmeTitus” as a password a couple times.😆

In Chicago, protesting has become the new ‘brunch.’ We frequently do it, but MSM doesn’t cover. This weekend is the El Grito festival which celebrates Mexican independence. It’s in the Loop & participants are taking a tremendous risk due to the continued presence of ICE. They are the brave ones.

I’m really enjoying your commentaries on Lanterns & it’s been great to explore the show through your perspectives. Your dive into the use of the Outkast songs in Ep.3 was eye opening to me. The soundtrack for the series has been exceptional and I’ve been checking out the playlist every week.

I was at his amazing 1991 concert in Central Park. It was free and about 700K New Yorkers showed up to have a great time. “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes’ was transcendent and the joyous “Me and Julio Down by the School Yard” and “You Can Call Me Al” got everyone up on their feet.

My favorite role of his was Vinny in ‘Summer of Sam.” He created some real heat when dancing with Mira Sorvino. His character was a classic cheating husband and would have been easy to hate, but he brought such charisma to the role that you understood why his wife fell for him initially.

I used to babysit in the late 70’s and I loved those shows. I promised the kids that if behaved themselves, I would allow them to stay up late to watch The Hulk. The same rule applied to the Dukes of Hazzard.

I prefer to mentally compose mini curses against the person who was discourteous to me. The key is finding a vexation commensurate to the level of offense. EX: - May you burn your next batch of microwave popcorn. - May you forget to remove a kleenex from your next load of laundry. Then, let it go.

The year after I finished grad school and had no money to pay for cable (this was before streaming was available), I discovered the DVD collection at my local library and was able to watch the entire Star Trek TNG series. It was a bright spot in a tough year.

When I was traveling in Europe on the 80/90’s, I had two compartments in my bag. One for clothes for museum/sightseeing and the other for restaurants/bars/nightclubs. The nightclub clothes were wrapped in a plastic bag. The stench of opening that bag after the trip was eye-watering.

Early concept sketch of the Witch’s Tower Room. Attributed to Jack Martin Smith, 1938. At the “Land of Oz: Beyond the Book” exhibit at the Driehaus Museum, Chicago.
Watercolor showing the Wicked Witch of the West stirring a cauldron on a pale walled room with a large mural of a crowned skull with a large snake weaving through the eye sockets. A large batlike creature hangs from the ceiling, while a flying monkey stares at the Witch. Thankfully, the creative team did not go with this concept, which would have traumatized kids for generations.
