Separating the neural correlates of #consciousness from those related to unconscious processing is challenging. This #EEG study by @maelanmenetrey.bsky.social &co suggests two-stages of visual processing as individual stimuli are integrated into a conscious percept. 🧪 #AcademicSky plos.io/4wwzxNb
Three graphs computed from EEG signals, showing that visual stimulus features that were not perceived consciously could still be decoded from the brain.

Technical details: Diagonal elements of the temporal generalization matrices, representing decoding results when training and testing at the same time point (group average AUC and SEM). Significant time windows are highlighted by the horizontal lines at the bottom. Temporal delays in the decoding results, relative to the actual onset of the vernier in the stream, are indicated by the dashed rectangles.

🚨 New preprint! What if individual alpha peak frequency—often treated as a global marker of brain function and clinical phenotypes—actually reflects a mixture of independent alpha rhythms with distinct frequencies and neural origins? That’s what @davidpascucci.bsky.social and I suggest here. #EEG
