Summary of the fic Shot Through The Heart by hordeofangrybees

Sometimes, Lucifer thinks about how it's his fault soulmarks exist at all. Heaven couldn't undo the damage once he offered Eve a taste of divinity, but they could at least make sure that they didn't have to deal with humans refusing to populate their new playground.

He and Lilith were supposed to be different. Unique creatures brought into the universe before soulmarks, before he introduced the concept of free will. They were the blueprints tossed aside so a new realm of creation could be forged. That is, until the day Lilith came home, sat him down, and took forever off the table.

All Lucifer ever wanted was for humanity to be able to choose for themselves what they wanted in life—for them not to be forced to ascribe to a path that was written for them before the stars were even hung in the sky. He almost did it; he'd been so close, but heaven always finds a way to have the last laugh.

Forcing Lily into a bond that never should have existed wasn't enough—they had to make sure Lucifer knew he never really escaped. In the end, they always win.

"Why do you suddenly give a shit about the king, anyway?"

"I don't," Alastor snaps too quickly, and the look Husk gives him says he isn't buying it. At least he has the sense not to press.

"Alright," he says, refilling Alastor's glass before sliding it back. "How about the scotch?"

"What about it?"

"I mean, I'm down to my last bottle of the good shit. Gonna need to make an early order if you keep this up."

With a snap, shadows slide across the counter and rise in a dramatic swirl before dissipating all at once, leaving two bottles in their wake.

"There," Alastor growls, snatching his glass. "Problem solved."

It's not. He knows it's not. Two nights is hardly the longest he's gone without sleep, and if that were all he was dealing with, he might not be quite so tetchy. Really, the exhaustion has been the final straw in a long list of issues, almost all of which start and end with the ridiculous man holed up in his room.

It's driving him mad.

Husk stares at him, eyes narrowed.

"What?" Alastor snaps.

"Something's up with you." He crosses his arms across his chest, his gaze critical, like he's picking Alastor apart, and it makes the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.

"There is nothing up with me," Alastor bites, and the silence hangs long enough that he's honestly considering how long he could keep him in the void before Charlie would start to ask questions when he finally speaks.

"Did you make another deal?"

"Don't be stupid."

"I'm not," Husk says, shaking his head. "Are you?"

Charlie knew he was up here.

Not only that, but she'd been checking on him and had reached out to Belle to make sure that he was okay.

"Whoa, kiddo, take a breath, yeah?" Lucifer stretches out for a moment, releasing the tension that came with sleeping curled over his knees, before folding them in front of himself and patting the edge of the mattress. "I'm okay. Promise."

That might be a bit of an overstatement, but he knows it's what she needs to hear right now.

There's a sharp inhale as she nods, more to herself than him. It's not until she tries to wipe away a tear that slipped free with her shoulder that she remembers why she was here in the first place.

"Oh, right!" she says brightly, walking over to the bed. "I brought you some food, if you’re hungry. "

She sets the tray on the bed in front of him, and he almost starts crying on the spot.

It looks awful.

Two flat, overcooked pancakes fill the entire plate. She's used two charred pieces of bacon to make a very sharp smile, and he can only assume that would mean the two broken, fried eggs must be the eyes.

"I know it's kind of a mess," she says, sitting on the edge of the bed.

"No," Lucifer tries to say, but the word barely makes it past his throat, leaving as a hushed whisper. He takes a shuddering breath around the knot forming behind his jaw and tries again. There's no hiding the emotion in his voice, but at least it's audible this time. "It's perfect, duckie."

"Charlie!" He chimes the moment the doors slide open. "Just the woman I was looking for."

"Oh, hi, Alastor." She says, stepping around him. "Did you need something?"

"Mm, no," he says. "Not as such, but as host of the hotel, I noticed our royal guest hasn't left his rooms today."

His eyes cut to the tray in her hands, and then back down the hall.

"Why is that?"

"You know," she laughs awkwardly. "I think he's just a little tired, is all. Big day yesterday."

"Quite," Alastor says, tone devoid of emotion.

"Right, well, I should bring him dinner."

"By all means," Alastor chimes, gesturing for her to step past him. "Don't let me stop you."

She makes it all of two steps before hesitating.

"Uh, listen. Thank you for bringing him back here."

"Where else would I have taken him?" Alastor asks, feedback cutting through the air as he digs the tip of his staff into the carpet.

"Still," she says with a shrug. "I appreciate it, and, well, I was wondering. Do you know…"

She hesitates, but Alastor only raises a brow, watching the apparent struggle she's set up for herself.

"Do you know how he got in that thing?" she asks finally.

"Oh, Charlie," Alastor coos, slipping into shadows to reappear behind her a moment later, making her jump and twist around. "You aren't blaming yourself for his capture, are you? I heard about your little spat in the lobby. Dreadful thing that."

He tuts softly, shaking his head.

"I imagine Vox must have caught wind that your dear old dad was vulnerable, and, well, he owns all the networks. It was easy for him to spoof your number. After that, all he had to do was mimic your voice and tell him where to go. Poor thing practically delivered himself."

It's almost too easy. Charlie's shoulders curl in on herself, and she stares down at the tray in front of her, lips pressed in a firm line.

"Oh, don't be so hard on yourself, dear," Alastor reasons, putting an arm over her shoulder to pull her close, his voice pitched low. "I'm sure Vox would have found another way to capture him, even if you hadn't thrown him out on the street."

"I guess," she says dejectedly before looking down the hall. After a beat, she looks back, and pride curls in his chest as he watches her force a smile. "How are you doing, by the way, after all the stuff with Vox?"

"I'm not sure what you mean," Alastor says, pulling away entirely and pressing his staff between them once again.

"I mean, you were there for a few days, and I saw you on 666—"

"Everything went exactly to plan," Alastor says, cutting her off. "I am fine."

She chews at the inside of her lip, watching him with a look that makes static buzz across his skin, audibly rising around them. He is the last person she needs to waste her bleeding heart on.

Thankfully, she nods, recognizing her words are not needed, nor wanted.

"Right, well. If you need anything—"

"You'll be the first to know." It's a blatant lie, and they both know it.

"Good."

Alastor watches her disappear down the hall before he sends his shadow after her. The moment it slips beneath the door, he's gone.
