The C&EN Guild has learned that earlier this week, one of our members was required to attend a meeting concerning discipline without union representation.
The C&EN Guild has learned that earlier this week, one of our members was required to attend a meeting concerning discipline without union representation. Later that day, the employee was directed to leave the building without being permitted to gather their personal belongings, and their badge access was deactivated.

This is deeply concerning—and unacceptable.

Since our bargaining unit was certified in March, C&EN employees across the editorial and operations teams have had the right to union representation during investigatory meetings or discussions that could reasonably lead to discipline or termination. No employee should be left to navigate a disciplinary process alone while decisions affecting their employment and access to the workplace are being carried out.

As we prepare to bargain our first contract with the American Chemical Society next month, we expect ACS to respect the rights of its bargaining unit employees, and we hope the Society’s leaders come to the bargaining table ready and willing to work with us in good faith.

"Any organization benefits from giving workers more say in decision making," says Liam Conlon, C&EN community content editor. Hear from Liam on how a union would benefit C&EN. @wbng.org @newsguild.org #chemsky
Underneath the heading "Chemical & Engineering News Guild" is a quote attributed to Liam Conlon, community content editor. "Any organization benefits from giving workers more say in decision making, and that's even more true in an agile workplace like a newsroom. We want to make C&EN stronger and better prepared for the future, especially in the face of other journalism outlets falling by the wayside." Next to the quote is a circular image showing Liam's face. They are posing with a half-smile, with curly, sandy hair falling around their face.
