If I’d queried above 100 agents with absolutely no bites or feedback to use, personally, I’d start by hiring an editor to look at my opening pages and query letter. After that, if they don’t identify a major issue, like a huge plot hole or something, I’d give print sources a try. 1/2

I love how horror and thrillers have been picking up steam. I’m not really sure as to the cause, but personally, I’ve always loved a good Blumhouse film. There has been a big shift away from romance and comedy in movies. I think we’re seeing books follow that same trend. #kidlitchat

I write YA horror, and while the horror elements aren’t something I’ve experienced in reality, the novel I’m querying was based on my time as a Christian youth camp counselor when I was younger. I’m currently in the process of starting up another MG/YA horror novel. Similarly, it’s partially real.

As a querying writer, I have noticed a similar issue where queries keep disappearing from my dashboard. I can only access them if I find the original email links or if I get a notification about that query, so I’m glad I keep a separate reference sheet in Google.

Another example, the flickering light is mentioned twice in the final paragraph. The sentence starting “A floor lamp with…” could be shortened to “The flickering bulb illuminated the room in brief flashes.”

Be cutthroat with edits. A mentor once told me to write one good sentence, then, the next good sentence. Shorten wherever possible: “Tereja long dreamed of discovering something that would finally let her cast magic and earn a place among the Archon, erasing the pity in her mother’s eyes.”
