Madaxeman @madaxeman.bsky.social · 09/10/2026The Franks are creeping towards “done” now - waiting for the wood stain to dry before finishing basing. Probably won’t get it done before I head off to #Partizan though 1472
Madaxeman @madaxeman.bsky.social · 08/10/202628mm @wargamesatlantic.bsky.social Frankish palette cleanser after a lot of 15mm cavalry … 0121
Madaxeman @madaxeman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026It was wven worse with metal casting and hard plastic “kits” - the figures need to be designed differently for each manufacturing process. If snipping off supports is the “price” of being able to get 3D prints of “OOP” metal ranges “from a mate, for pennies” then I bet many will happily pay it. 120
Madaxeman @madaxeman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I’ve also heard that in the “GW” world there are AI programs that can create a 3D STL from a single photo - so new GW model releases are being “almost-copied” before they are released for sale. With that sort of tech you could soon be making “new-poses” STLs in the style of existing metal ranges! 000
Madaxeman @madaxeman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026And once scanning to STL becomes easy enough to do at scale, it’s also easy enough for “your mate with a scanner” to copy a few figures for you as a favour - and if the range is no longer cast in lead or sold many gamers may not even feel guilt about a bit of light scan+print action anyway … 110
Madaxeman @madaxeman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Its almost a catch 22. If a range can still make money by casting its figures in lead, that’s what its valuation will be based on. But if it’s not commercially viable to cast in lead .. the that range probably doesn’t have enough legacy customers to make converting to STLs viable anyway .., 110
Madaxeman @madaxeman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026.. which probably means it will be tried first with a fairly weak and unloved range … 110
Madaxeman @madaxeman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Easy scan-to-STL software and scanners will get there soon - so we will find out the answers soon too. But no one knows how to value a set of STLs of an old metal range .. so it may take a proper last-resort fire sale event before a range comes up at a price that allows this gamble to be taken 120
Madaxeman @madaxeman.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Two things, maybe three.. - scanning tech isn’t “quite” there yet, especially for small scales - 3D prints look “finer” (and I say that as someone who loves many metal ranges), so is there really a market for “clunky” 3D prints? - metal casters want to recoup the capex on moulds when they sell up 320

Madaxeman @madaxeman.bsky.social · 27/09/2026The GB plastic infantry box is a bit of a must-have for 28mm Arab armies I reckon - they are so ubiquitous that the main downside is you almost always see the same guys fighting for the other side too!
