The American data centres are the really worrying ones. What’s the biggest Russian “AI” company? Yandex? It’s utterly insignificant even next to a gutter-tier American AI like Grok. The numbers also don’t match:

Historically, fascism has only really needed about 1/3 of the population to take power, especially in lack of an organized left to stop it. The truth is that if Putin had a heart attack in 2005, and Russia was just a run of the mill post-Soviet kleptocracy, you’d still have President Trump.

As for why Trump was successful, the reactionary right in the U.S. has always been about 30-40%. Successive lacklustre Democratic campaigns were eventually bound to fail. The lesser-evilism of Clinton, Biden and Harris only worked once, and barely at that.

I wasn’t aware that they ever needed permission or were ever “dormant.” I seem to remember a thing called Gamergate, and before that the TEA Party, and before that the Bush regime (which still has a higher body count than the current one.) We could keep going.

Maybe after this happens, the Separatists will consider the far more realistic option of separation by migration. Get ready, Montana, you’re about to have a lot more of… your core demographic I suppose.

How is Churchill paying for this with Queen Elizabeth II pound notes? Sloppy. Real sloppy.

It’s also a shitty analogy. The U.S. isn’t in a formal state of war with russia, and certainly not the type of total war between UK and Nazi Germany. Like, I guess a closer analogy would be İnönü’s Turkey buying oil from Hitler, which they probably would, had Hitler any oil to sell.

Just like the first Nazis, the people under the leader are much worse than the leader himself. The leader is just the glue that holds them all together. Miller, Hegseth, Thiel, etc. are all worse human beings than Trump, but they are also nothing without Trump.

This is anachronistic as all hell. You can’t apply a binary that doesn’t really exist before 1945 to 1865. Both Lincoln and Booth would be deeply confused by this meme.

I’m kind of growing weary of Americans constantly trying to dodge culpability for Trump by passing it off to Russia. Trump sees Putin as an ultraconservative who gives billionaires a carte blanche, and views him as a natural ally. He also fantasizes about flipping Russia against China. That’s it.

Only 6% are undecided or not voting? Something is up. Non-voters are consistently the biggest block, and frankly, I think that their candidate, Nobody, should be the president of the U.S.

Has Trump even mentioned the $5000 thing in the last couple of weeks? I am just waiting for the reveal that everyone gets “5000 Trumpbux” that can only be spent on his web store, and amounts to like $13.50.

This is biological essentialism. As humans, we are constantly defying our biological impulses. Consider the fact that, in every culture, when a man gets together with a woman who already has a child, the man doesn’t instantly kill that child as a Chimpanzee would. This is cultural, not evolutionary.

100%. It also weirdly accepts Zionist logic. Like, the proponents of Khazar theory say that Zionist colonization of Palestine is illiterate because there is no historical connection between European Jews and Palestine, implying that if there was a connection, the colonization would be legitimate.

And Iranian history. But the first Bush will be the worst in Iraqi history, LBJ the worst in Vietnamese history, Polk the worst in Mexican history, et cetera. I guess all I am really trying to say is that you lot need to stop making your presidencies relevant in other country’s histories.

Every American election seems to be a campaign of selling Coke or Pepsi to a nation of diabetics. Yeah, I know, the Coke can has been laced with arsenic, but that in and of itself is not enough to get people to drink a can of Pepsi that is still going to hurt them.

Every once in so often, Trump does something that makes it clear that, despite all of his security clearances, he still gets all of his information from Fox News. Congratulations, Yanks, you’ve elected your creepy, cranky, racist old uncle who dropped out of high school in the 60s. Twice.

That said, it’s been a decade. Every leader worth their salt has figured out how to manage Trump. Of all of the world’s leaders, Xi is probably the most deft at Statesmanship, so this isn’t hard for him to manage, but he is definitely aware of the risks and possible surprises.

Combud @macsrw.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
To say that Xi has “no fear” of Trump isn’t exactly right . All world leaders have the same fear of Trump that they would have of a petulant 5 year old with an assault rifle. Just because he is an idiot doesn’t mean he is not dangerous (quite the reverse, in fact)

Counter-point: China Rail is a publically owned company, and it has high speed rail that I’ve used many times and is also amazing. The big difference is the fares are deliberately kept as low as possible. Public ownership doesn’t have to be inefficient, it just needs to be done right.

I think we need to reconceptualize the notion of democracy. It isn’t a system, but rather a goal. And it’s something that can not be achieved in perfection, but can constantly be refined and improved. Selection of leaders is one, very limited, way of achieving it.

Combud @macsrw.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
For sure. And there need to be deep reforms afterwards (optimistically assuming there is an afterwards). One of the biggest flaws of Western concepts of democracy is that it begins and ends with election campaigns. In the U.S., those have become little more than a cash fight.

About 15 years ago, Chris Hedges wrote about the coming of what he called “inverted totalitarianism”. It’s really eerie how accurately he described it, even though back then the idea of “President Trump” was little more than a throwaway Simpsons joke.

It seems to me to be a much larger general trend, highly connected with the rolling back of the New Deal. Bush accelerated it, and Obama didn’t really stop it. It will continue after Trump, unless his downfall is much bigger than just getting rid of one guy.

Combud @macsrw.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Well, Jeff Davis does come to mind. But you are correct that most of the monsters of American history that I was thinking of were largely popular in their day (with the possible exception of Polk). As for the erosion of American Democracy, I’m afraid it goes well beyond Trump.

I can think of several Americans who are worse than Trump, but they are mostly 18th and 19th century slavers and génocidaires who either aren’t really thought about that much, or are lionized as “founding fathers” or some such thing.

I wish the U.S. was only Germany in the 1930s. Germany in the 1930s didn’t have nuclear weapons. If the U.S. becomes Germany in the 1940s, there will not be a 1950s.
