A big ol’ spider close up. In crouch position. Some strands of its web radiating out from its central position at left of frame. Mouthpieces (chelicerae) are readily visible. Two of its many eyes reflect the light from the camera and are hirsute, with individual hairs sticking out. Altogether the arachnid looks fierce and spooky. Alternating bands of dark and light coloration on its hind and forelegs. Zoomed out alternative shot similar to previous photo. A big ol’ spider, less close up but still in zoom. Spider is in crouch position. Many strands of its web radiate out from its central position in frame. Mouthpieces (chelicerae) are visible. Two of its many eyes reflect the light from the camera and are hirsute though hairs are harder to appreciate in this photo than previous. Altogether the arachnid looks fierce and spooky. 🧪Brilliant advice from Nobel Laureate Artem Patapoutian.. (syndicated from the bad place, formerly the bird site). “Artem’s rules on how to science”… Also see the Alt text, split between two images). Enjoy!
Ardem Patapoutian @ardemp
I wrote down my rules on how to Science. I hope you find it useful!
Here are my top 13 rules on how to do science (why should it be only 10?):
1. Don't be too busy (Rule #1: No excuses. If you're too busy, you're not being creative).
2. Learn to say no (related to #1).
3. What question to ask: Find the biggest unanswered question that can be approached in the next 5-10 years.
4. Science communication: When you talk about your work, always start by stating what the important open question is (this is fundamental, but very few do it; related to #3).
5. Prioritize: Know when to quit a project (as important as coming up with new ideas).
6. Change fields when the open questions are no longer interesting: Being from a different field allows you to look at problems with a fresh perspective.
7. Ask for help - don't reinvent the wheel.
8. Don't listen to advice if it doesn't make sense to you (this does not contradict #7..8. Don't listen to advice if it doesn't make sense to you (this does not contradict #7).
9. Hire people who are smart, efficient, and kind (don't forget about "kind").
10. Champion the underprivileged.
11. Collaborate with people with very different training and experience.
12. Cultivate friends who tell you when you are wrong.
13. Don't forget why you got into this business in the first place: Science is fun. Minimize the noise that causes anxiety.

Imagine a world without mRNA in our food, mRNA-free fruits and vegetables, mRNA-free farm animals. All our problems would be gone! An mRNA rapture! 😇

I will introduce legislation for it to be a felony criminal act to use mRNA in the food and water supply with mandatory jail time... no exceptions.
It is proving to be a bio-weapon at best and a proven tool of genocide and suffering at worst.

✊🏼 🫡 During the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of individuals"needlessly lost their lives due to misinformation & disinformation. Now is the time to develop better strategies for communication between scientists & the public" - recent AAI president Gary Koretzky 🔗 www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Although we all hope that it will be a long time before we face the next global pandemic, now is a great opportunity to reflect on how the scientists interfaced with the public as we faced the challenge of COVID19. There is much for which we can be proud. Even so, hundreds of thousands of individuals need lessly lost their lives due to misinformation and disinformation. Now is the time to develop better strategies for communication between scientists and the public, both to improve the baseline of understanding and to be prepared for the next emergency.

 Hello ****,

Because of MDPI’s longstanding predatory publishing tactics, and their willingness to publish papers without regard for reviewer concerns, I refuse to participate as a reviewer, author or editor. And I try my best not to cite MDPI journals.

For example, why would anyone want to publish in a journal affiliated with MDPI after seeing this paper get published in MDPI Vaccines? (There are many other examples like it)

Aid for Israel and Ukraine
I'm a Shreveport voter who lives in your district, LA-04. I noticed that you're trying to separate aid packages for Israel and Ukraine and to insist on budget cuts to pay for them. I'd like to remind you that Shreveport and Bossier city both benefit enormously from Federal dollars coming to the Barksdale USAF Base and the LSU Medical center, not to mention federal subsidies for medical care that benefit senior citizens and others in need who seek health care from Willis Knighton, LSU and other providers in the Shreveport Bossier area. I STRONGLY am in favor of increasing support to NIH and to keeping vital U.S. aid to Ukraine and Israel at or above the numbers that POTUS is requesting. We need to help Israel destroy Hamas and also ensure that Putin doesn't drag us all into even more costly wars by teaching him we will abandon our allies. Please do the right thing. This is not a time to play games. Under Trump, you voted for enormous tax cuts.

Peter Bogner still up to the same old nonsense. Having him at the helm of GISAID is a threat to global health security. Whatever happened with the governance reforms we were promised back in April? gisaid.org/resources/st...
Content from Twitter, posted 2023-10-23 by Theo Sanderson @theosanderson:
I am a researcher studying viruses. I have contributed to the sequencing of more than a million genomes deposited in the GISAID database.
Last week I found that my access to bulk downloads from GISAID had been cut off without cause or explanation. [1/3] This is part of a pattern of arbitrary suspensions of GISAID features that have happened to numerous researchers. These actions have real consequences for our ability to study pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 and to contribute to public health. [2/3] It is bizarre that this key global infrastructure for pathogen sharing is subject to unpredictable gatekeeping with no clear policies.

GISAID announced that it would set out reforms in the "coming weeks and months". That was in May: any news? [3/3] https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-01517-9
