Mine is in the Humanities, Science PhD’s are expected in many science / research professions and of course are pre-reqs for post doc fellowships and such. Humanities are to “teach and save the world”, goals so lofty as to appear self indulgent, and they are, a bit!

I got mine because the cosmos aligned; I was offered a full ride plus pay, I researched a topic I was very interested in, I had no other job so it became my full time job, I was given an office, computer, unlimited printing, access to academic libraries all over the world. Otherwise? Don’t do it.

Never pay to go to grad school. If you can’t get a full ride scholarship with teaching assistant jobs offered on the side, then it’s not worth it. Do NOT get a PhD because there’s a job at the end of it-there isn’t. Earn a PhD because you have a burning question you want to answer to help the world.
