In Brazil they did this because the Aedes Aegypti is an invasive species and it’s a vector of many diseases here. So it’s more of a invasive species control than extinction

Curiously I’ve seem prestigious science channels defending such things. Kurzgesagt for example defended exterminating mosquitoes and the flies from central and South America. Just because “they’re annoying and cause profit loss for farmers and people”
