Immigration enforcement has become a system designed to break people — not protect communities. Families separated. Legal residents swept up. Human beings warehoused in conditions that violate their basic rights. We cannot look away.

This isn't only happening far from home. In June 2025, WBUR reported ICE was holding immigrants in inhumane conditions at the Burlington, MA field office — a building never designed for detention. Lawyers witnessed clients who were cold, hungry, and terrified.

One former detainee called it "1,000% worse than a prison." We grieve for communities like El Paso, where these facilities have taken root. Residents deserve local leaders who will say: not here, not like this.

Justice requires more than words. It requires showing up. And we will continue to do just that.

Earlier this month, Mabel Center joined @masslawreform.bsky.social to answer questions from legislators prior to the Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security hearing about the PROTECT Act. The bill has now been reported favorably out of committee.

As an immigrant justice organization providing legal aid to asylum seekers, we know these protections are not abstract. They determine whether our clients can safely access courts and defend their rights.

The bill would keep local law enforcement focused on public safety and strengthen due process by ensuring all Massachusetts residents can access courthouses without fear of being violently and unjustly apprehended.

Across the country, states and local leaders are pushing back against expanded federal immigration enforcement and working to protect community trust and due process. Here in Massachusetts, the PROTECT Act led by the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus would do exactly that.

An @immcouncil.org report confirms what we've witnessed: a 2450% increase in the arrests and detention of people with no criminal history proves there is no "right way" to pursue legal status in this country. ICE is separating families and tearing people from their communities without cause.

Without legal representation, asylum seekers navigating Immigration Court proceedings are at greater risk of being sent back to persecution in their home countries. Nearly 90% of asylum seekers without representation were denied asylum.

The federal government is expanding its monitoring of social media. The reach of law enforcement agencies is still unclear. Learn some examples of what can be used against you in immigration proceedings.

Across U.S. immigration courts, after immigrants attend their court hearings and a Judge has told them they are free to go, ICE is waiting to arrest them and whisk them away. What is happening is unjust and immoral. For the past two days, we have been at MA courts to advise people of their rights.

‘They can’t be taking people like that’: Federal agents make arrests at Massachusetts immigration courthouses - The Boston Globe
As the Trump administration pursues its campaign promise of mass deportations, federal agents are using a new tactic of apprehending people at immigration courthouses — including in Massachusetts.
