The Australian is impatient over the length of time the investigation is taking into Canberra's greatest ever whodunnit; the unravelling of the banner behind Pauline Hanson during her NPC appearance. The AFP has been likened to Chief Wiggum of Springfield Police. #auspol
Police probe into GetUp! banner stunt at NPC continues as activists boast of success. Margin Call has heard the National Press Club is considering launching a civil case – but only after the police investigation is finished. It could be a long wait. Who has the ACT Police assigned to investigate GetUp!’s stunt at Pauline Hanson’s National Press Club address: Chief Clancy Wiggum? It was more than two months ago that the left-wing activist group unfurled a banner during the One Nation leader’s press club speech, which accused the senator of selling out Australian workers. NPC chief executive Maurice Reilly and the gang were furious to learn that two people had apparently interfered with the club’s equipment in the exact spot the mechanised banner was installed. Their efforts were captured on the club’s CCTV footage. GetUp! published a video of the unfurling. The footage in that clip seemed perfectly aligned with the seat occupied by the left-wing activist group’s media head David Sharaz, who left the venue shortly after the stunt. Hours later, the ACT police said they were investigating a “complaint regarding the alleged unauthorised access and interference with equipment in a building in Barton”.
Weeks later, Margin Call revealed that key figures involved had been interviewed. AFP Forensics officers had also been involved. Two months on, GetUp! apparently could not be less troubled. On Monday evening, the outfit hosted a strategy session with its supporters titled “Taking on the far right”.
The promotional material caught our eye. “We’ve done the loud stuff. When Pauline Hanson fronted the National Press Club in June, we were right behind her with a banner,” GetUp! boasted. They even seem to take credit for the recent dip in One Nation’s support in opinion polls. “That peak was Hanson’s National Press Club address, and it’s also where she cracked. In the same appearance where GetUp lowered a banner behind her, she called for Australia to become a ‘monoculture’. Nine p…

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli will introduce his latest crime slogan as a bill to the parliament today. It appears he is attempting a partial removal of the rule of law in certain cases by reversing the onus of proof on the alleged. More details later. #qldpol
Tough new Qld bail laws reverse onus of proof for serious offenders. Serial offenders and pedophiles will no longer enjoy the presumption of bail under the most significant bail law overhaul in Queensland history.Serial offenders and pedophiles will be forced to prove they deserve bail as part of a major overhaul of the Queensland judicial system by the state government. Laws to deliver Premier David Crisafulli’s “breach bail, go to jail” crackdown will be introduced to Parliament on Thursday. In a major move, alleged offenders who commit a serious crime while on bail will face a higher threshold to be let out on bail again.Currently a person who is charged with a serious offence while on bail for a serious offence has to show a court why staying in jail isn’t justified.Under the government’s proposal, a court should refuse bail unless they have a high degree of confidence the offender will not commit another serious offence while on bail.It will be applied to youth and adult offenders facing any of the 47 adult crime, adult time offences.Adults charged with a coercive control or child sexual offences will also have to prove they deserve bail. Those who breach bail face a minimum 12 months’ prison under the new laws.Critics argue the policy will put pressure on at-capacity detention centres and risks creating a new crime wave. The laws will be introduced in Parliament on Thursday and be sent to a parliamentary committee for Queenslanders to have their say.
However Mr Crisafulli has indicated his government would not place significant weight on the comments of experts. He called on everyday Queenslanders to lodge a submission, “not just the same Queenslanders who convinced those opposite (Labor) to weaken it 10 years ago”.Mr Crisafulli said the legislation was one of the most significant packages of bail reform in the state’s history.“These are important reforms the ministers have been working through for some time to deliver the nation-leading stronger bail laws that w…

Sorry, what? The US didn’t just demand the right to restrict us from making trade deals with other countries - they demanded that they be able to force Canada to impose new tariffs on other countries and set the rates of those tariffs. That’s just agreeing to let the US control our economic policy.
