Scion, James Islington ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5 The first of my 5 stained-edge books this month is Scion, a #newrelease from an Aussie. As with all great books, the setting is the backdrop and it's revealed little by little, focusing on the task at hand: our MC is a contract killer. #scifi #dystopia #climatefiction

Hollow Bones, Jodi Picoult ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/5 This was unputdownable. I received a signed copy as part of my admission ticket to see Jodi give the final keynote address in Winston-Salem last Sunday at the Bookmarks Festival of Books and Authors. What an engaging person!

The Mountains We Call Home by Kim Michele Richardson ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫3.5/5 The novel covers interracial marriage, unjust imprisonment, treatment of African Americans, law enforcement gone wrong & other unjust laws and history. Since many of these issues persist today, much of it is, sadly, current events.

Children of Strife by Adrian Tchaikovsky ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5/5 The 4th volume of the epic Children of Time saga spans thousands of years and rivals Foundation or the Expanse. It is a stunning look at civilization, the good, the bad and the ugly. Read these in order. It's not a standalone. #sciencefiction

Time Tourist Outfitters Ltd by CN Jackson ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5/5 In the future, #timetravel is a regulated industry. But when an extremely ill time traveler appears through a rogue portal in Toronto, time agents start getting sick; former time agent Wilda Firestone is asked to come back on active duty

Somehow I managed to order 4 books online this week. In my defense, I had a coupon, a free book offer, and a $10 cashback if I spent $20 on one of my credit cards. That's like throwing money away if I DON'T buy the books, right? 😁 #bookcollector

The Last Contract of Isako by Fonda Lee ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5 500 years after the planet Aquilo was settled, terraforming continues while colonists live under airshields. Not quite a dome; it's temperature-permeable. The entire planet is a "company town" and its culture has grown up around that plan. #spaceopera

The Paris Daughter, Kristin Harmel ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/5 I truly couldn't put this one down! While I saw the final twist coming 100 pages before the end, I was shocked by how it was revealed. Harmel is a fantastic writer & while I shy away from WWII #historicalfiction this was an all-time fav for me!

A Time of Witches, Madeline Martin 🪄🪄🪄🪄🪄5/5 Madeline Martin is an auto-buy for me, and I wasn't disappointed. Dual-timeline #historicalfiction with #magicalrealism where one woman is fighting to survive England’s notorious 1645 witch hunts and the other is coming to terms with a legacy of power...

Land by Maggie O'Farrell ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5 A unique book. The history of a peninsula in Ireland, from the perspective of one family... with a dab of magic. Eugene was my favorite character. A non-verbal autistic, before such things were defined (1870ish onward) he had a unique way of seeing the world.

Daughter of Egypt by Marie Benedict ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5/5 Dual-timeline novel set in 1486-1458 BC Egypt and early 1920s England, this is the story of post-WWI aristocrat Evelyn Herbert, daughter of a wealthy backer of Egyptian archeological digs (and Howard Carter), and the first female pharaoh, Hatshepsut.

Gold Rush, Peter Cawdron 🚀🚀🚀🚀4/5 I'm always impressed with Peter's books. I've been a fan for years & while I haven't read them all, I always enjoy them. They put the science into scifi, yet talk about humanity & who/what we are (emotional/psychologically/tempermentally) just as much as the science.

They Walked Like Men, Clifford Simak #ClassicScifi ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5 A reporter tries to thwart aliens who are buying up the planet, property by property, even if no one believes they walk among us. They are interstellar realtors who look like bowling balls but can shapeshift into anything, including humans.

We are lucky to have great air conditioning in the States, and I'm thankful for it when it's 93F and the air feels like a hot, wet blanket. Tips for surviving without A/C: Find a shady spot, preferably with a breeze; sit still; and the only movement you should make is turning the next page. 🌞📘

The Parisian Chapter by Janet Skeslien Charles ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5/5 This book is an ode to libraries and to friendship. Taking place in 1995, it's a follow-up to The Paris Library. Love, friendship lost and found, and getting along with your coworkers are central themes. What a lovely book!

The It Girl, by Allison Pataki ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5/5 Elelyn Talbot's journey from poverty to stardom at the turn of the 20th Cen. was an engaging tale. Girl suffers. Mother pushes girl to work harder to support them. Girl climbs ladder. Men take advantage of girl. Girl gets "sponsor" and makes lots of money.

Seek the Traitor's Son by Veronica Roth ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5/5 I loved the Divergent trilogy but wasn't a big fan of Carve the Mark (& I'm fairly certain I didn't read the 2nd book in that series). This novel goes back to Roth's roots, rolling out a dystopian future with a fresh new premise, artfully executed.

The Second World, Jake Korell 🚀🚀🚀🚀4/5 Flip is always second & who remembers 2nd? He doesn't want to change the world or be remembered, but Flip wants to do what's right, even if he doesn't always get it right. And he always comes in 2nd, which really pisses off his father. Humorous space adventure.

Broken Dove by Dani Francis (Silver Elite #2) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 Way to leave me hanging for the 3rd book! This was an excellent dystopian future novel. Once again, the Mods and the Primes are at war, but when has humanity not been at war? Both groups fear the other and want power over the other.

The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5 I didn't love this one right off the bat, but it grew on me. The Dominion is a parallel, fantasy Britain, ruled by one Queen after another. Queen Yvanne has a female knight, Sir Una, more commonly called Una Everlasting.
