With the tariffs etc I think I'd need to sell about 20 of these to make rent in the next 10 days, so... I'd better get cracking!

My statement on the ICE shooting in Marble Hill ⬇️

"Today in Marble Hill, ICE agents fired multiple shots at a man in his vehicle while his 5-year-old child was in the back seat.
ICE's already unwelcome presence in our city has been growing more escalatory and dangerous by the day. Today's shooting is a grave development that requires a swift and immediate response to protect the safety of all New Yorkers.
First, we must have a full and independent investigation of this incident.
"There must also be a full and immediate release of all body camera footage of the incident.
In addition, the Target Corporation must stop offering their Bronx properties as private staging sites for ICE, in compliance with requests from New York officials. Target opening up large, active retail parking lots for paramilitary activity is unacceptable and places the entire community at risk.
ICE is a rogue, lawless paramilitary and surveillance agency.
It does not belong in New York City and it should not exist in the United States of America. Abolish ICE.”

It is fucking absurd how much y’all want boys to have an unobstructed successful future and treat girls like fucking cannon fodder every last high school girl out there is more valuable to the world than a boy or man who has committed sexual assault

The deployment of National Guard troops into cities has been so normalized that it barely merits a mention in the press or among the public anymore. D.C. remains occupied, Memphis is occupied, so is New Orleans... It's incredible to me.

Which leads me to wonder about the writers. I am pretty sure I remember Jane Espenson saying that the nerds were just tons of fun to write. So, why is it that the writers room had such good insight into repulsive incels-in-waiting, and so little for a teenage girl?

Dawn is an interesting contrast to the way the Trio are written. I would argue that Tom Lenk isn't any better actor than Trachtenberg, for instance. But they are much better written. More consistent, more coherent. I _loathe_ them, but as characters, they work.

Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
My biggest issue with Dawn is that she is written very inconsistently. And it is possible that the great actor could have made Dawn seem coherent, but Michelle Trachtenberg was 14, and while she was good at her job, she was not a genius level talent.

I've just finished Season 6 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (used DVDs, bought a long time ago, no money to Joss). I have a lot of complicated thoughts about this season. But I'm thinking about Dawn, at the moment. I was always fine with Dawn as a plot development.

Ok, I did finally notice when I stayed at her house, and we had a midnight picnic on the lawn, with strawberries and white wine, and she fed me the strawberries, and somewhere in there I _finally_ got it. Because, as I said, no one was gay back then.

Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
It was not until many years later I was able to correctly identify the expression on her face as "Oh, boy, this one is above my pay grade." She declined to elaborate. Jokes on me, though. Anga was _absolutely_ trying to seduce me. I just didn't notice.

I remember a very funny (in retrospect) conversation with one my high school teachers who suggested that I _not_ skip down the halls holding hands with my best friend. People might get ideas! I was deeply confused, and asked Mrs. Davis, "What kind of ideas."

Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
And so, the transition is going about as well as you would expect, which is to say, very poorly. I guess what I hope is that those of us who do remember a world with gay people can use the lessons we learned to care for our trans friends.
0201
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
So, that's probably part of the trans story, too. Better treatments lead to more visibility and a greater priority on identifying and treating gender dysphoria. So, people are discovering that friends and loved ones are trans, and it is a surprise.
1140
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Once you have an effective treatment for a thing, it becomes much more reasonable to diagnose that disease so that it can be treated. A good medical intervention creates more visibility for the condition, and a greater priority on treating it.
1191
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
So, with the only treatment being a tracheotomy, mostly doctors didn't try to diagnose sleep apnea, because after many thousands of dollars, all you could offer was "try to sleep more" or "permanent hole in your throat." So, try the first, don't go on to the second.
1131
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Of course, people did have sleep apnea when they were young. Originally, sleep apnea was called "Pickwickian Syndrome" after a Dickens character. The disease has been clearly described for a very long time. But we didn't have a non-terrible treatment until the 80s
1151
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Possible medical interventions also probably have a part in all of this. Quick digression: I'm a sleep tech. Most of my patients are older people. So, I get asked not infrequently, "Are you sure sleep apnea isn't a scam? Nobody I knew had it when I was younger."
1170
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I have to assume that there were people I knew in the 70s who were trans, and I just never knew. And I don't just mean the couple of very butch girls I knew in high school. I assume there were some number of my acquaintances who just never mentioned what sex they had been assigned.
1140
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
It's not like we're done with it, either. I mean, people still feel it necessary to protect the "reputation" of members of Congress who don't want it known that they are gay. It's still hard. And I think something like this is happening with trans people, maybe?
1130
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Silence = Death. It felt very sudden, that gayness went from something that essentially didn't exist except at a distance to a thing that was part of our family and friend group. The transition was not smooth. There was a lot of pain, loss, and horror.
1161
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Of course, we all knew any number of gay people, we just didn't know that we knew. It was a genuine shock to discover that my father, the Fundamentalist minister, was gay. (Long story, lots of tragedy, some very funny bits.)
2180
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
In the time and place where I grew up, gayness was something that happened rarely, far away, and not to real people. Also, it was entirely a choice, a thing that terrible people did to tempt the straights. Or something. I wasn't too clear on that part, actually.
1210
Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
But, well, then AIDS happened. People got outed, whether they wanted to be or not. Other people died of AIDS in the closet, and various explanations such as "sudden pneumonia" were cited by friends and relatives.

Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I remember people being loudly insistent that Liberace, Elton John, and Freddie Mercury were _obviously_ straight men. David Bowie was explained as "Well, he is Australian." The hatred of disco was entirely about lascivious white people with too much money who danced too well.

Lydy @lydy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I don't know how important this is, but it seems like it might be relevant to the trans rights discussion: I think that a lot of people 50 and younger do not remember when no one was gay. I am 64, and I was raised in a conservative household, and I absolutely remember this.

Personally, can't really write in longhand. I probably have something like dysgraphia. I can think in Graffitt and I can think in touch typing, but I can't think in long-hand. But that touches on a different part of my thesis: different things are experienced differently, because embodiment.
