"We’ve seen Missouri's legislators do everything they can to limit the voice of the people by overturning citizen initiative ballot issues that have been passed by the voters and adding unnecessary restrictions to the century-old petition process," says LWVMO President Marilyn McLeod.

"HJR 73 deliberately undercuts the will of the people who worked so hard to get Amendment 3 on the ballot and the voters who passed it," says LWVMO Reproductive Rights Chair Kay Park. HJR 73 is a deceptive ballot measure the House passed seeking to overturn Amendment 3.

Let your Senators know you oppose HCR 73. Its ballot language tries to deceive voters and doesn't make clear that it would overturn Amendment 3 and restore an almost total abortion ban. #MOLEG

"Don't undermine the citizen initiative petition process," LWVMO President Marilyn McLeod told a Senate Committee on April 28. Testifying against HB 507, she said the process is already cumbersome for the people to get something on the ballot and "extra rules are unnecessary."
Responsible government should be responsive to the will of the people.

"Attempts to erase women's history go against democracy" is the title of Marilyn McLeod's guest column available online at #stltoday. It will be in the March 30 St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
It’s hard to see any benefit in erasing the achievements of women and minorities. This revisionist history demonstrates weakness, not strength.

"The Missouri legislature has a history of rushing to put things on the ballot with language that courts have found to be deceptive or misleading," says LWVMO President upon Senate passage of SB 22. "Politicians, no matter the political party, are apt to be partisan in their statements."
It is essential for the courts to provide the oversight needed to ensure fair ballot language

Congress may take up the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act this week to require citizenship documentation to register to vote in all 50 states. Tell your Member of Congress to oppose the SAVE Act. bit.ly/40LZB8L
Requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote would disenfranchise many eligible citizens.
