Absolutely hilariously bad email from one section of the university regarding accommodation for migraines. It can be summed up as 'tell me you've never had a migraine without telling me you've never had a migraine'.

Rest assured AI-generated email, 'Borders and the Norman World' has reached the people it needs to. Now bog off.

I'm having one of those days where I really miss county cricket, or more precisely the community around it.

Ours are run by what's left of the dept. It's decades since I was at Nottingham, but the ensembles were not independent of the dept. Horses for courses, I suppose.

Leonie V. Hicks @lvhicks.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
As well as dismissing languages and music as hobbies, ensembles are traditionally run by members of the music department, so how exactly this would work is anyone's guess.

Too busy teaching today, but I'll try and read it tomorrow. I haven't written a huge amount on the Tapestry per se as opposed to bringing it in to broader writing as evidence when appropriate.

I also found a home in the music department when I did my MA in Archaeology at Nottingham. The early music concernt lives long in the memory. Once a department is closed, it's far from easy to resurrect it again. Shame on Norttingham. 2/2

My sister studied Zoology at Nottingham, but the music department was her real home where she was involved in many ensembles. It gave her an excellent grounding before she did postgrad performance at the Royal Northern. She's now principal bass with Royal Northern Sinfonia. Awful news. 1/

Fortunately I've been able to prep on the train, but I shouldn't have to worry about making it on time for a 3pm.

Well I made it to Waterloo just after 1210. Waiting for the stopper for Canterbury which is usually reliable.

The trains this term are beyond a joke. Today a power cut at Bournemouth so no trains to Waterloo from Soton. X-Country to Winchester, but only the rear 4 coaches in service of an 8 coach train. Now on the stopping service and should get to Canterbury with ½ an hour to spare...

My brain keeps going back to why it doesn't work and AI slop aside, it's because they don't understand the original, particularly the purpose of the margins to tell a side story. I am now bothered by the fact it's lodged itself in my head.

There is a video of Alex Burghart, Tory deputy leader and erstwhile medieval historian, explaining the 'Tapestry' which comes closer to satire.

You know what Kemi, Alex et al? I'm quite happy to pay tax and for it to be spent on welfare. It's called sharing, helping and caring. I've just checked in the mirror and there is no arrow in my eye. #BirminghamTapestry #CPC26
The final panel of the Tories' so called 'Birmingham Tapestry' showing people in faux medieval clothes with arrows in their eyes. They are labelled 'British Taxpayers'. The margin shows some rats, some people lying down (not sure what they are supposed to be), more taxpayers being short, what I think might be refugees in small boats and some prisoners who have been released early or who have escaped. It is a bit of a mess and the worst pastiche of the Tapestry every created. It's neither good satire, nor funny.

This isn't even a good pastiche. There is a long tradition of #BayeuxTapestry iconography being used as satire or commentary (mainly by the right) and this is the worst I've ever seen.

I was fortunate to have seen the exhibition twice due to doing things for the BM so stepped back from the trip. I feel for Michael Lewis who has bourne the brunt of medievalists' disgruntlement when it's not his fault.

I've had a right tussle with CCCU to get a group booking. I mean it's not like it was probably made in Canterbury or anything and has a close association with the history of our campus. Fortunately sense has prevailed, but I won't be going with 1/
