Plot of how my mood/life has been going. (Actually a plot of NSF research awards in the astronomical sciences made through the AAG, ATI, and MSIP programs. Source: aas.org/posts/news/2...)
Plot of NSF research awards in the astronomical sciences made through the AAG, ATI, and MSIP programs, demonstrating a 57% reduction in the number of awards made between FY25 and FY26, corresponding to a 51% decrease in awarded funding. Note that FY21 had an abnormally large number of continuing grants awarded (50 compared to an average of 5 in other years), so these grants were removed from the FY21 data.

NASA recently tried to save the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory from re-entering the Earth's atmosphere (the orbit decayed due to Sun-Earth interactions). Unfortunately, they could not save it, so they turned this moment into a space physics modelling challenge. As Homer once said "crisitunity"☀️
Email to the CEDAR space physics community. The beginning reads: "Dear Community Members,

NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory was launched in 2004 to detect and monitor gamma-ray bursts. After 21 years of science operations, Swift’s low Earth orbit began to rapidly decay because of increased solar activity. Swift is expected to reenter later this year, around November. More information and news about Swift can be found at https://science.nasa.gov/mission/swift/.

Thermospheric density is the dominant source of uncertainty in the atmospheric drag and associated satellite orbit determination and reentry. Thermosphere models estimate neutral density, composition, and temperature based on the solar and geomagnetic drivers. To make advances in orbit computation and determination, accurate specification and forecasting of the thermosphere are required. The uncontrolled Swift reentry event provides a natural experiment opportunity to test community capabilities for thermosphere mass density forecasting, in particular, at VLEO below ~300 km untill it reaches ~100 km. The goal of this research modeling challenge is to evaluate the sources of error in orbit predictions, ranging from model inputs, solar and geomagnetic driver prediction, model accuracy, the debiasing/drag coefficient tuning process, and orbit propagation."

Researchers talk about being "hit by a bus", meaning their research needs to continue if they were to suddenly pass away. It is also a light-hearted reminder to back up/share/publish your work. Last week an undergraduate researcher I work with unexpectedly passed away, and it has been a heavy time.
