In that heavy silence, in the growing tension before Erik breaks down, we see the dog — the part of him that’s still good — barking at the messenger, as if trying to drive away the bad news. And Erik kills her.

And when the messenger arrives with the bad news — when we see Erik’s face in those first few seconds — the camera pulls back for a moment. The dog starts barking. And she’s barking at the messenger.

Notice how the dog cuddles up to the characters. Especially Erik. He pushes her away impatiently. This is not the time for tenderness, for emotion and vulnerability. He is busy, he's playing a grown-up boy, fighting for his place in the world — just as Istvan taught him.

I was sooo impressed by the scene where Erik finds out about Istvan's death. But watching it again, I realized he doesn’t just kill the dog in an emotional outburst. Note that Erik wears WHITE armor throughout the entire game. And the dog is also WHITE... so...
