I can agree with like 1% of this sentiment in that I don’t believe “ai could kill us” but I do believe that the people building (funding) it earnestly want us dead, probably
'They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives," he said. "The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt ... No other human activity poses this level of danger."

"matlab is really into this calculation"
Stack Overflow
How can I interrupt MATLAB when it gets really really busy?
I'm running a long simulation in MATLAB that I've realized I need to stop and rerun. However, MATLAB is really into this calculation, and it's stopped responding. How can I interrupt this run without killing MATLAB?

I THOUGHT WE LEFT FREE ENERGY BEHIND IN 2005 BUT APPARENTLY NOT
The Body Does Not Keep the Score: Trauma, Predictive Coding, and the Restoration of Metastability By Steven Kotler, Michael Mannino, Glenn Fox, Karl Friston For nearly a decade, the idea that "the body keeps the score" has shaped public and clinical understanding of trauma. It is an enticing metaphor-implying that experience is literally inscribed in flesh, that the body bears the scars of what the mind cannot face. Yet recent advances in computational and systems neuroscience reveal that this image, while emotionally compelling, is biologically inaccurate. The body does not store trauma; the brain dynamically reenacts it through maladaptive inference. What endures after trauma is not a memory lodged in tissue but a collapse of flexibility-a loss of metastability, the brain's ability to fluidly switch among semi-stable network states. The traumatic memory is real, but it is entrenched in deep, defensive ravines in the landscape of our beliefs and thoughts. The landscape in question is a free energy landscape where every (Bayesian) belief is equipped with a measure of its plausibility. On this view, making sense of the worldand our bodies -entails a process of (Bayesian) belief updating that can be read as minimizing free energy or, in the vernacular, finding apt explanations for our sensations that are the least surprising, or the most plausible. When trauma strikes, the brain's Bayesian mechanics, as described by the Free Energy Principle and Active Inference -the continuous anticipation and minimization of surprise-can lock into a narrow regime of threat expectation. Functional imaging studies show this concretely: in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), neural networks become hypersynchronous, dominated by recurrent loops between the amygdala, hippocampus, and medial prefrontal cortex....

anecdotally the part about citation advantage from funny names is actually so true tho our lab had one of those (=papers with funny/catchy titles) and it was always funny whenever we brought it up same with people with catchy/unique last names imo
Previous research into the public communication of science and education has shown that laughter enhances learning, makes content more memorable and increases connection to a speaker. Stephen Heard, an evolutionary ecologist at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, Canada, and his colleagues have found that research papers with humorous titles have a citation advantage, presumably because they are more likely to be shared and read.

eyyyyyyyy
“Our literature by and large is pretty tedious. Pushing it a bit is fun, and actually seems to help,” says Heard. He plans to nominate the new work for an Ig Nobel — the prize for science that “first makes you laugh, then makes you think”. “That is awesome,” says Stout.

Bloodworth replayed for the jury a clip of Richins’ 911 call from the night of her husband’s death. That’s “not ‘the sound of a wife becoming a widow’,” he said, quoting the defence’s opening statement. “It’s the sound of a wife becoming a black widow.”

However, after attending a green card interview on the morning of November 17, Hanne and her husband were informed that ICE agents were outside and wanted to speak with her. Upon entering the room, they arrested Hanne, leaving her speechless and in "complete shock." Her husband started crying as Hanne was placed in handcuffs.
