Ritual artifacts within the grounds of Nezu Shrine (Nezu Jinja) in Tokyo's historic Bunkyo Ward
This intimate vignette offers a quiet encounter with the sacred architecture of Inari worship. In the immediate foreground, a braided white hemp bell rope (suzu-no-o) hangs in soft focus, suspended before a low, weathered wooden fence (tamagaki) that demarcates the shrine's inner sanctuary (honden). Behind the barrier sits a carved stone fox (kitsune)—the celestial messenger of Inari Ōkami—adorned with a red cloth bib (yodarekake) offered by devotees. Above, a deep indigo textile valence (mizuhiki-maku), dyed with a white family crest (kamon) and hung with folded white paper streamers (shide), casts a cool shadow over the stone steps ascending into the shadowed interior.

Dating back by legend to ancient times and relocated to its present site in 1706 by the fifth Tokugawa Shogun, Tsunayoshi, Nezu Shrine stands as one of Tokyo’s oldest and best-preserved Shinto complexes. Remarkably spared during the 1923 Great Kantō Earthquake and the bombardments of World War II, the shrine enclave retains the quiet, atmospheric charm of old Edo's shitamachi (low city). The presence of the kitsune guardian anchors the precinct within popular agricultural and merchant traditions; the red bibs, routinely replaced by local worshippers, serve as votive offerings expressing gratitude, prayers for health, and protection against malevolent forces through the ritual color vermilion.

Japanese landscape photography as "Pearl Fuji" (Pāru Fuji), where the full moon rests precisely at the apex of Mount Fuji's crater rim like a luminous orb.
This photograph captures the rare celestial alignment known in Japanese landscape photography as "Pearl Fuji" (Pāru Fuji), where the full moon rests precisely at the apex of Mount Fuji's crater rim like a luminous orb. The extraordinary symmetry of the volcanic cone provides a bold, monumental foundation, its famous 3,776-meter silhouette rising with effortless grace above a low-lying cloud bank. By positioning the moon at the exact midpoint of the crater peak, the composition creates an intense focal balance, transforming the towering mountain into a cosmic altar supporting a glowing sphere of golden light.

The chromatic harmony of the scene relies on a delicate interplay between warm and cool tones. Twilight’s fleeting alpenglow coats the jagged volcanic ridges near the summit in a soft blush of rose madder and dusty violet, echoing the classical visual tradition of Aka-Fuji (Red Fuji). Further down, the mountain's sweeping flanks transition into deep indigo and slate, grounded by a soft veil of cobalt mist clinging to the lower slopes. Behind the peak, the sky transitions smoothly from a warm, champagne-gold glow at the horizon into a muted, dusk-toned pale grey, casting a soft, diffuse light over the craters and gullies carved into the volcanic rock.

Beyond its photographic precision, the image deeply resonates with the aesthetic traditions of Japanese visual art, echoing the graphic clarity of ukiyo-e prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige as well as the atmospheric solitude of 20th-century shin-hanga nightscapes. In Japanese art history, the juxtaposition of the immutable mountain with the fleeting arc of the moon embodies the profound tension between structural permanence and seasonal impermanence (mujō). The deliberate, harmonious placement of the celestial body evokes a spirit of serene contemplation (yūgen), catching a fleeting, tranquil moment where nature, atmosphere, and geometry achieve perfect visual poise.

The 42nd Traditional Kaga-Yuzen Crafts Exhibition Members’ Exhibition: Visiting Dress ‘Waku’ Tomoji Ueda Artist’s Comment : I felt the life force like water gushing out, and I expressed this as a pattern on the kimono.
Tomoji Ueda’s visiting dress (hōmongi) titled Waku ("Gushing Forth") presents a breathtaking visual translation of elemental energy, capturing the continuous movement of water as a surging source of life. Crafted on a serene ice-blue silk ground, the composition utilizes the traditional eba-mōyō layout, wherein the dyed design flows seamlessly across the seams from the upper right shoulder and sleeve down through the lower skirt. Swirling bands of deep indigo, violet, turquoise, and seafoam green sweep dynamically across the garment, creating sinuous, ribbon-like currents that mimic freshwater bursting from an underground spring. The design moves with an organic cadence, balancing open fields of luminous sky-blue silk with dense, rhythmic vortices of color along the hem and sleeves.

Demonstrating the supreme technical discipline of Kaga Yuzen—the historic hand-painted paste-resist dyeing tradition of Kanazawa—Ueda relies on masterly pigment application and delicate itome-yuzen resist lines rather than heavy surface embroidery or metallic leaf. Fine, concentric arcs of white stippling trace the internal currents of the water, creating the impression of cresting spray, bubbling foam, or light glinting off a rushing stream. Interspersed within these energetic swirls are sharp, four-pointed starbursts and small, jewel-like floral medallions (hanabishi), which anchor the fluid abstraction with moments of refined geometric clarity. The subtle color gradations (bokashi) within the sweeping currents lend the fabric an extraordinary sense of three-dimensional depth and translucent radiance.

Presented at the 42nd Traditional Kaga-Yuzen Crafts Exhibition, Waku exemplifies how classic textile techniques can reinterpret nature through a contemporary graphic lens. When worn, the garment's fluid motifs adapt dynamically to the motion of the body, allowing the painted currents to shift and ripple as though truly alive.

The Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, illuminated by lanterns during a snowy evening. Photography by k n u l p on Flickr.
Captured by photographer k n u l p, this twilight study showcases the quiet approach (sandō) to Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine (櫻山八幡宮) in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, blanketed in fresh winter snow. Dominating the composition is a grand, unpainted wooden torii gate, its upper lintels and crossbeams topped with soft drifts of white. In the crisp chill of the blue hour, the warm cedar tones of the gate are illuminated by a pair of traditional paper lanterns (chōchin) mounted on tall wooden posts, casting a rich, golden light across the entrance.

The wet stone paving of the central pathway glistens beneath the snowfall, catching long, liquid reflections from the lanterns and the distant lamps lining the walkway. Beyond the main gate, the pathway draws the eye toward the shrine’s inner steps and timber pavilions, framed by ancient cryptomeria and pine trees whose heavy branches bow under the weight of the snow. The cool, deep indigo hues of the twilight sky and dark forest create a striking chromatic balance against the warm amber glow of the sanctuary lights.

Renowned as the host site for the autumn Takayama Festival (Takayama Matsuri), Sakurayama Hachimangu assumes a profoundly serene character during the alpine winter. The interplay of pristine snow, traditional timber joinery, and soft lantern light evokes a quiet stillness, capturing the timeless refuge of Shinto sacred space within Japan's winter landscape.

Don’t know who wrote this — it was posted on Instagram by “Warpaint Journal” in April 2025 — but it’s making the rounds today and is pretty great. I dream of this too ❤️
Most people don't dream of being fancy-rich.
I dream of being rich enough to say, "Treat's on me," without thinking twice. Rich enough to have a home that feels like a hug, a fridge stocked like a five-year-old with adult money, and a tray of chocolates waiting for someone to grab. Rich enough to quietly help a friend before they even have to ask. To send a care package when someone's too tired to reach out. To buy all the pencils from a kid on the street so they can go home early. For me, the real money dream isn't about luxury - it's about having enough to give, enough to comfort, enough to turn ordinary moments into something extraordinary.

Created by acclaimed Kaga-Yuzen master Kakimoto Ichiro (柿本市郎) for the 42nd Traditional Kaga-Yuzen Crafts Exhibition, Shirobana Higan ("White Spider Lily") is a tour de force of high-craft textile art.
Executed as a furisode and displayed in full eba-moyō layout—where the pattern flows seamlessly across every seam—the garment exemplifies the supreme painterly discipline of Kaga-Yuzen. Unlike Kyoto’s Kyo-Yuzen, which frequently incorporates gold leaf (kinhaku) or heavy embroidery to heighten luxury, Kaga-Yuzen relies purely on dye technique, precise line drawing (itome-yuzen), and delicate shading (bokashi) to achieve its depth and quiet drama.

Set against a rich indigo-navy (kon-iro) silk ground, the composition explodes with the rhythmic vitality of white spider lilies (Lycoris albiflora). Crisp, luminous white petals with delicately recurved tips and soaring, thread-like stamens dominate the upper shoulders and hem. Kakimoto achieves extraordinary atmospheric dimension by silhouetting these crisp foreground blooms against shadowy, speckled background blossoms rendered in soft lavender and slate-violet hues. Slender, mint-green and seafoam stems rise vertically through the composition, anchoring the sweeping, buoyant motion of the petals and gold-tipped filaments.

Inspired by the arresting sight of pale spider lilies standing resolutely amid a sea of vibrant red blooms, Kakimoto translates a fleeting moment of natural wonder into a profound study of resilience and poise. The stark contrast between the luminous white floral forms and the midnight-blue background creates a dramatic, almost nocturnal glow, capturing both the fragile elegance and unwavering spirit of the autumn flower.

Japanese Indigo Dyeing: “Although it is an ancient method, the process continues to have a deep influence and importance on fashion even today.”
This display showcases the extraordinary depth and versatility of traditional Japanese indigo dyeing (aizome, 藍染め), featuring an array of bolts and textiles decorated using diverse resist-dyeing techniques. Central to this craft is natural indigo derived from fermented polygonum leaves (sukumo), celebrated for producing vibrant shades ranging from pale sky blue (mizuasagi) to near-black navy (koiai). The textiles on display highlight a spectrum of classical techniques, including intricate shape-resist shibori (tie-dyeing), stencil-applied rice-paste resist (katazome), variegated marbling (arashi shibori), and woven ikat patterns (kasuri). By pairing these centuries-old resist techniques with rich natural pigments, aizome continues to serve as an enduring bridge between Japan's historic material culture and contemporary textile and fashion design worldwide.

The 42nd Traditional Kaga Yuzen Crafts ExhibitionVisiting Dress “Plum Scent” exhibited by a member, Ichiro Kakimoto Artist’s Comment : I tried to express the strength of the intersecting branches and the old tree with moss that bends vigorously.
Exhibited at the 42nd Traditional Kaga Yūzen Crafts Exhibition, Plum Scent (Ume no Ka) by master craftsman Ichirō Kakimoto (柿本市郎) is a magnificent visiting dress (hōmongi) that perfectly exemplifies the painterly realism and refined technical mastery of Kanazawa’s Kaga Yūzen tradition. Fulfilling Kakimoto’s intention to capture the strength and vitality of an old tree, thick, lichen-dusted limbs twist forcefully upward across the back seams, branching out into a delicate lattice of dark, sharp twigs that reach the shoulders and upper sleeves to frame a dense canopy of pale plum blossoms (ume) at the neck. Unlike Kyoto's Kyō-yūzen, which frequently relies on metallic leafing and embroidery, this piece celebrates pure hand-painting with rice-paste resist (itoshinori). It features quintessential Kaga hallmarks, including kaga-goki (outside-in petal shading) and precise naturalistic details in the moss-draped bark and budding flowers. Set against a pale blush-white ground that gently deepens into a rich mauve-lavender at the hem (suso-boke), the composition achieves a grounded, sophisticated harmony between structural force and delicate botanical beauty.

An intricate section of Fushimi Inari Taisha, located at the base and slopes of Mount Inari in Kyoto, Japan. This image captures the Otsuka (stone altars) and dense clusters of miniature torii gates. Photography by German Vidal
German Vidal’s striking photograph captures one of the most sacred, layered spaces along the mountain trails of Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) in Kyoto, showcasing an Otsuka-gun (お塚群), or stone altar mound. Situated beyond the famous main vermilion-gate pathways, the forested slopes of Mount Inari are dotted with thousands of these private stone altars (otsuka), which are dedicated by worshipers, families, and businesses to honor specific manifestations or deity names (kami) of Inari—the Shinto god of rice, business prosperity, and good fortune. Devotees frequently offer small wooden torii gates as gestures of gratitude or prayer, crowding them around the stone structures alongside statues of fox guardians (kitsune), the revered messengers of Inari who often wear red bibs (yodarekake) given by pilgrims. Vidal employs selective desaturation to emphasize this spiritual landscape, rendering the weathered granite pillars, stone steps, lantern bases, and rock faces in stark monochrome so that the vibrant vermilion-orange of the miniature torii and bibs pops dramatically against the shadowy hillside.

Daigoji is an important temple of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism and a designated world heritage site. The large temple complex stands southeast of central Kyoto and includes an entire mountainside. Photography by Stephane Barbery on Flickr
An incredibly evocative vertical photograph by Stephane Barbery captures the grand, historical presence of the Karamon (Chinese-style gate) at the Daigoji temple complex southeast of central Kyoto. The image honors this important sanctuary of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism, which spans an entire mountainside and stands as a designated World Heritage site. Applying a masterfully textured, painterly overlay that mirrors the feel of an antique hand-colored print or aged canvas, the photographer highlights the enduring interplay of sacred authority, political history, and exquisite architectural design that defines this monumental gateway.

The composition anchors itself on the symmetrical elegance of the gate, which is celebrated for its heavy, dark timber frame and a thick, gracefully curving cypress-bark roof (hiwadatabuki). Set against a low, white-plastered wall topped with traditional ceramic tiles, the dark wooden structure provides a stark, imposing contrast that demands reverence. The gate is famously adorned with massive, gleaming gold-leaf crests (mon) that signify its historic imperial connections and patronage. Flanking the central doors are two oversized Chrysanthemum crests (kikumon), the ancient symbol of the Japanese Imperial Family, while the central panels feature a pair of prominent Paulownia crests (kirimon), historically associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who famously reconstructed parts of the complex for his legendary spring cherry blossom viewing party in 1598.

In the foreground, a series of shallow stone steps leads up to the threshold, partially sectioned off by a low, weathered wooden fence featuring an open cross-brace pattern that echoes the geometric gold detailing along the bottom panels of the gate itself. The soft, overcast sky breaks into warm, muted gold and cream tones above the roofline, filtering through the lush canopy of mature trees that rise behind the wall.

An ancient tiled gate at Saiho-ji Temple (commonly known as Kokedera or the Moss Temple), a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Kyoto, Japan.
The composition centers on an ancient, traditional tiled gate embedded along a secluded woodland path, surrounded by a brilliant canopy of changing foliage. The perspective looks down onto the structure from an elevated vantage point, emphasizing the harmony between classical Japanese architecture and the temple's legendary, meticulously nurtured natural environment.

The lower half of the frame focuses on the rustic gate, which features a steep gabled roof clad in weathered, dark grey ceramic tiles. A scattering of fallen orange and red maple leaves rests on the roof's ribbed surface, mirroring the vibrant colors of the forest floor below. Beneath the gate, a stone-paved threshold transitions into a winding flagstone path that traces a line toward the background, flanked by low embankments covered in a lush tapestry of deep green moss and a heavy carpet of fallen autumn leaves.

Rising above the gate is a dense, multi-layered forest canopy that fills the upper register of the composition with extraordinary color. The trees present a magnificent gradient of seasonal transformation: deep green pine needles and late-summer leaves on the left give way to fiery shades of orange, amber, and brilliant crimson Japanese maples (momiji) in the center and right. The late afternoon light filters softly through the leaves, illuminating the forest floor with a golden radiance and casting long, gentle shadows that heighten the deeply meditative, sacred atmosphere of this historic Zen temple garden.

the entrance to the Isshin-in Temple, a sub-temple located within the historic Chion-in temple complex in Kyoto, Japan
the image highlights the elegant harmony between traditional Buddhist architecture and natural landscape design, utilizing a high-angle perspective that looks down into a quiet, stone-paved courtyard surrounded by lush autumn greenery and delicate seasonal flora.

The lower right foreground is dominated by a wild, natural arrangement of Japanese anemones (shūmeikuwa), their slender stems arching gracefully to display delicate pink blossoms that soften the stony textures of the courtyard. A rustic path of irregular, pinkish-grey flagstone stepping stones (tobi-ishi) cuts diagonally across the dark, gravelly pavement, guiding the eye toward the formal entry structure.

The focal point of the composition is a traditional tiled gate (mon), featuring a gabled roof clad in iconic grey ceramic tiles (kawara) with decorative ridge-end tiles (onigawara). Flanking the wooden posts of the open gateway are two large, white paper lanterns (chōchin) adorned with elegant black calligraphic text and geometric family crests (mon). Through the open threshold of the gate, a glimpse of an inner garden reveals a dense patch of white flowers and a clean gravel path, creating a sense of layered depth. Looming immediately behind the gate is the massive, sweeping tiled roofline of the main temple hall, which stands out against the soft, densely forested slopes of the Higashiyama mountains rising quietly in the background.

Looking out of Meigetsu-in temple, Kamakura, Japan明月院 鎌倉. Photography by kiccyomu on ganref
A vertical architectural photograph by kiccyomu, sourced from GANREF, captures the iconic, deeply meditative view through the circular window at Meigetsu-in temple in Kamakura, Japan. The composition stands as a stunning contemporary exploration of shakkei (borrowed scenery), looking out from the dim, contemplative interior of the main hall toward the pristine temple grounds beyond. Bathed in a warm, golden autumnal light, the photograph masterfully juxtaposes the geometric symmetry of traditional Zen architecture with the organic, ephemeral beauty of the changing seasons.

The upper portion of the frame establishes a strong architectural rhythm, dominated by the rich, horizontal grain of a polished wooden ceiling divided by heavy, dark support beams. Suspended along the central axis are two elegant, octagonal wooden lanterns overlaid with paper screens, casting a soft, diffuse amber glow that accentuates the serene mood of the hall. This dark, structural upper register compresses the viewer's field of vision, drawing the eye down toward the smooth, neutral-toned earthen wall that houses the room's spiritual focal point.

The heart of the composition is anchored by the large, perfectly circular Satori no Mado (Window of Enlightenment). Through this flawless architectural aperture, a sunlit autumnal garden unfolds like a classical painting, showcasing a delicate, bare-branched maple tree set against a backdrop of soft, misty light and a neatly manicured, low-lying hedge. The morning or afternoon sun streams directly through the circular opening, casting a bright, crescent-shaped pool of pure light onto the tatami and woven floor runners in the foreground. To the right of the window, a small, rustic wooden chest topped with a classic iron tetsubin (tea kettle) sits in the soft shadows

Kinpusenji pagoda - Mount Yoshino, Japan. Photography by Rickuz
A vertical landscape photograph by photographer Rickuz captures the iconic pagoda of Kinpusen-ji Temple peeking through a sea of cherry blossoms on Mount Yoshino in Nara Prefecture, Japan. The composition is a breathtaking celebration of traditional Buddhist architecture and hanami (cherry blossom viewing) culture, closely mirroring the romanticized, atmospheric style of early 20th-century shin-hanga prints.

The composition is framed by a dense foreground and mid-ground of blooming sakura (cherry blossom) trees. The delicate, pale pink and white blossoms form soft, cloud-like textures that gracefully wrap around the architectural structures, interspersed with subtle hints of rich crimson spring foliage in the lower left corner.

Rising elegantly through the blossoms is the pagoda of Kinpusen-ji. Its dark, tiled roofs cascade down in multi-layered tiers, accented by a striking, vermilion-red balcony railing (koran) wrapped around the upper level. Small, traditional bronze bells hang delicately from the corners of the upturned eaves. The structure is crowned by a remarkably tall, intricate metal finial (sōrin) that cuts cleanly into a soft, golden-hued evening sky.

In the mid-ground, the sweeping gabled roof of an adjacent temple building echoes the classical timber craftsmanship of the complex. The deep green, forested slopes of Mount Yoshino rise in the background, providing a rich, natural contrast to the delicate pink tones of the blossoms and the stark, structured geometry of the sacred architecture.

A vertical painting titled Tamamo-mae by the Japanese artist Tachibana Koume captures a hauntingly beautiful, legendary subject from East Asian folklore. The composition presents an exquisite study of traditional Japanese aesthetics, masterfully blending classical bijinga (paintings of beautiful women) conventions with the mysterious, supernatural atmosphere of the yōkai mythos.

The right side of the frame features the elegant, slender figure of Tamamo-mae, the infamous nine-tailed fox spirit disguised as a brilliant courtesan. She stands in a graceful, slightly inclined pose, looking down toward a cluster of autumn flora. Her identity is subtly and dramatically revealed as she lifts a stylized white fox mask (kitsune-men) above her face, revealing a glimpse of her dark hair and pale, human features underneath.

Her garments showcase beautiful textile craftsmanship and design. She wears a rich, deep reddish-brown under-kimono completely adorned with an intricate pattern of golden-orange blossoms, tied at the waist with a coordinating patterned sash. Draped over this is a voluminous, ethereal white or pale grey outer robe (uchikake) decorated with faint, translucent floral or butterfly motifs. The long, fluid lines of the drapery cascade elegantly down to her feet, pooling softly on the ground.

The left half of the composition is dominated by a detailed arrangement of traditional autumn grasses and flowers (aki no nanakusa). Tall, delicate plumes of white silver grass (susuki) stretch upward, juxtaposed with dense clusters of bright yellow blossoms and delicate blue bellflowers (kikyō). The entire scene is set against a warm, muted tan background with subtle, smoky color gradations that enhance the dreamlike, legendary quality of the narrative.

By Japanese artist miki katoh, 2019 painting materials: Watson paper, gouache
The composition centers on a young woman with very long, straight black hair that cascades down her shoulders. Her complexion is smooth and exceptionally pale, and she gazes directly forward with pale, luminous eyes. She sits or kneels gracefully, her right hand raised close to her chin, delicately holding a deep red camellia flower blossom.

She is dressed in an elegant, dark olive-brown or charcoal-toned kimono adorned with a subtle, repeating pattern of golden-tan flowers and foliage. Her wide obi (sash) features a contrasting, geometric Art Deco-influenced pattern in shades of orange, cream, and black, bound tight with a blue obijime cord.

The foreground is dominated by large, sprawling branches of a camellia bush. The leaves are rendered in heavy, dark bronze and deep maroon tones, veering into near-black shadows. Nestled among these leaves are tightly closed buds and a large, fully opened striped camellia flower in the lower left, its petals a variegated mixture of pink, red, and white streaks encircling a pale yellow stamen cluster. Beneath the main branches, the ground is depicted as a dense, carpeted blur of rich red camellia blossoms.

In the background rises the imposing, multi-tiered facade of a traditional Shinto gatehouse, modeled after the Zuishin-mon gate of Kanda Shrine. The architecture is rendered in warm wooden tones, decorated with red lacquer railings, complex gold brackets, and ornamental horizontal panels featuring sculpted figures of golden horses and colorful birds.

The lighting is soft and flat, characteristic of traditional Japanese illustrative styles, relying on fine line work, intricate patterning, and a rich, warm color palette dominated by deep reds, golds, and dark greens. The artist's English signature "Miki Katoh" and the year "2019" are neatly inscribed in dark script near the lower right cluster of leaves, with an additional watermark along the very bottom edge.
