highly recommend that you plan to have your interview out far in the future, in my experience when i applied, the easiest appointment to get was *in* the airport, past security, so i just did my interview on my way to MFF.

i had huge anxiety around TSA specifically, getting precheck *did* improve my anxiety quite a lot (it makes security less stressful beyond shorter lines) staff are generally less shouty and in your face in precheck points too

We’re a little less prepared because of de minimis, I think. We pulled it back because it would overwhelm CBP from the sheer number of Temu, Shein, and etc. packages, but we check our packages less, and trust the customs broker more.

I drive an EV, and, in my state, I pay around $200 on a required “fee” (their words) to fund what would be funded by gas taxes. It funds things the same way as that tax, but under your definition, it would be a junk fee.

Because I’m not arguing semantics, I’m arguing that it’s not a junk fee. It funds a department, people’s salaries, etc. It’s not a fuel surcharge that allows fare costs to be displayed as lower than they truly are (though this has died out with many airlines recently)

This is quite the semantics. If you want to be right, sure, it’s a fee. But to me, it’s money collected by the government to fund the operation of a service, so it’s a tax. Nearly every country charges (in one way or another) these kinds of “fees” and some call it a tax.

Sure, but it’s not a fee, it’s a tax. The money goes to the TSA, and is there to help fund it. Whether the TSA is a worthy institution to have funding is another question.

This fee is different, it’s government mandated. A better example is Fuel Surcharges from airlines, they’ll sometimes charge twice the cost of the ticket in “international fuel surcharges” and call it a fee. It had a reason in the fuel crisis, but not as much anymore.
