The Library is celebrating Roses 2026 by displaying a selection of rare items from Special Collections and Archives. This public exhibition tells the story of the Wars of the Roses (1455-1487), the medieval contest between Lancaster and York. You can find this exhibition in the Library entrance.
A photograph of a dark red poster hanging on a wall titled 'Henry VI and the House of Lancaster'. The poster has a block of white text narrating the events of Henry's reign. To the left of this text is a painting of Henry, the dates he lived and reigned, as well as a red rose for the House of Lancaster. To the right are images of other important figures from this period, including Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York and Margaret of Anjou. There is also a list of major battles in the Wars of the Roses. Beneath this poster is a glass display case containing two books and their labels, an image of Henry VI, and a printed extract from a chronicle.A photograph of an open book entitled 'History of the Life and Reigne of Richard the Third' by George Buck, published in 1647. The sign reads: 'Please take a free crochet rose to commemorate your visit. Don't forget to sign our guestbook and share your thoughts on this exhibition.' However you're celebrating... chances are the Edwardians felt it too! Happy Valentine's Day from Lancaster University Archives and Special Collections! 💖 The Edwardian Postcards are now accessible through Lancaster Digital Collections.
An Edwardian postcard. A boy peeks his head over a garden wall as two girls read the letter he has given one of them. The caption reads: 'My First Love-Letter'.An Edwardian postcard. Two happy newly weds stroll down a beach front promenade. A man with a pipe watches them go by as a frowning lady looks down her monocle at them and says 'I hope it will last'. The caption reads: 'Two Hearts Beat As One'.An Edwardian postcard. An elderly couple stand, holding hands, at a beauty spot overlooking a distant lake. They are looking at a young couple sitting on a bench in the foreground, who appear to be sharing a private moment. The poem 'Love's Old Sweet Song' is reproduced below this scene: 'Even to-day we hear love's song of yore, / Deep in our hearts it dwells for evermore; / Footsteps may falter, weary grow the way. / Still we can hear it at the close of day. / So till the end, when life's dim shadows fall, / Love will be found the sweetest song of all.'An Edwardian postcard. A man sits bent at a small writing desk, an ink pot beside him, writing a letter. The verse below reads: 'Some to you have written, / Some to you may write; / But none will love you better / Than the one who writes to-night.'
