Which I’m bringing back the Patrick O’Brian quote of the day, concerning urination
‘It is well known that I am an urinator,’ said Stephen, looking at him firmly, ‘and in recent hours I have felt a great moral pressure on me to dive.’ It was quite true: no one had openly suggested anything of the kind, and after Hairabedian’s fate no one could decently even hint at it, but he had observed many low-voiced conferences, and he had intercepted many glances directed at his diving-bell, now stowed upon the booms – glances as eloquent as those of a dog. ‘So with your permission I propose descending as soon as John Cooper shall have reassembled the bell. My plan is to attach hooks to the openings in the galley’s deck, which being hauled upon will break up the floor-boards, revealing all that lies below. But I need a companion, a mate, to help me with the necessary manoeuvres.’

The Libertarian Party of NH is truly a world-historical collection of weird dummies

Presented without commentary, from the Buzzfeed listicle “Professionals Who "Read" People For A Living Reveal 21 Common "Tells" People Have No Idea Abou
“17. "I’m a business consultant. I graduated from one of Canada’s top business schools with really good grades. I help struggling small business owners make it in this competitive world. A couple of years ago, I met this woman who was a CEO at one of the most exciting tech startups in the world with millions in backing from hedge fund investors. For her privacy, I’ll call her Eliza. When I first sat down to talk with Eliza, the most important thing was to establish some trust with her. One of the first things she said to me was that she was 'engaging with me as a human,' which made me question if she was engaging with me as a human. When I pressed a little more, she insisted, 'I am being real with you,' which, again, raised some concerns about whether she was being real with me. Eliza is in jail for fraud now. I should have trusted my first instincts."

The trouble with you, Spode, is that just because you have succeeded in inducing a handful of half-wits to disfigure the London scene by going about in black shorts, you think you're someone. You hear them shouting "Heil, Spode!" and you imagine it is the Voice of the People. That is where you make your bloomer. What the Voice of the People is saying is: "Look at that frightful ass Spode swanking about in footer bags! Did you ever in your puff see such a perfect perisher?

Which it’s the Patrick O’Brian QOTD, concerning unorthodox uses of shells
The arrival of Admiral Snape and Captain Hallowell to eat their mutton with the Aubreys cut the conversation short, but it was not a great while before Stephen was on the subject once again. Sophie had whispered him to join her early, and as the three sailors were intent upon fighting St Vincent over again, shot by shot, it was not at all difficult for him to come away to the drawing-room while they were setting nutshells up in line of battle, and to come away with the certainty of a long, quiet interval before him.

The sailors, happy to be released from Fallopian tubes and biliary concretions, spoke of sperms they had seen within the Straits, Jonahs they had known, the horrible fate of ships in which Jonahs had sailed, and Jack’s party ended in an even more civilized way, moving from the sea to the land – plays seen, balls attended, and a furlong by furlong account of a fox-chase in which Mowett and Mr Ferney’s hounds would certainly have come up with their quarry if he had not plunged into a field-drain as darkness came on.

‘My hands have now regained the moderate ability they possessed before I was captured,’ observed Maturin, ‘but his have gone on to a point I never thought he could reach: his hands and his mind. I am amazed. In his own way he is the secret man of the world; but I wish his music were happier.’

This Edsall piece argues as if No Kings has a youth motivation problem, but these data points suggest to me that this movement is succeeding in capturing older voters. (Which is to say the most valuable age demographic of voters.) I really don't see the problem here. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/14/o...
She provided the following data about the three No Kings protests: “At No Kings 1 (June 14, 2025) the median age was 36, at No Kings 2 (Oct. 18, 2025) the median age was 44, and at No Kings 3 (March 28, 2026) it was 48. Clearly, it’s getting older.”

Various civic groups have self-organized to help them. Food banks deliver groceries. People donate money to pay rent. Doctors finish their shifts and then make house calls. The governor told us about a group of doulas who make secret home visits to deliver babies to mothers who cannot go to a hospital, because DHS agents view health care facilities as abduction traps.

Think about that: You now live in a country where volunteers deliver babies at home, in secret, off the books, because mothers fear that if they go to the hospital, they will be abducted by masked, armed agents of the state while giving birth.

This is not a hypothetical. It is your lived reality. It is America.
