Great to hear the Business Secretary announce a consultation looking at bogus self-employment. This is a real priority. If they get it right, it will improve working conditions of some of the most vulnerable workers, while protecting businesses who play by the rules.

I feel like I've been saying this for at least a decade. Most of what Britain needs for net zero, housing, productivity, public services, transport etc is physical stuff. We can either buy it or make it. It would probably be good for the economy if we managed to make at least some of it ourselves

Quick Wins sets out reforms to deliver an extra 87,000 new homes a year by the end of the parliament. These are measures that are no- or low-cost, and don't require new legislation. They would increase housebuilding to its highest in 50 years. fabians.org.uk/publication/...

Why? Because we don’t let places pay their own way and have the Treasury micromanage everything. We are overwhelmingly the most fiscally centralised major economy - raising just 5 per cent of tax locally. The treasury hoards taxpayers money and leaves places without.
