"Fight Iran energy shock with solar panels and heat pumps", the EU Commission said. Yes! We’ve been saying this every time energy prices hit the roof! It's about time we deliver. Europe needs independence kits to electrify every home. 👇 👇 👇 👇Here are a few examples 👇 👇 👇 👇

"If the Commission wants a story voters remember in 2029, it will not come from regulatory streamlining or industrial subsidies. It will come from something far more concrete: enabling millions of Europeans to take control of their energy future - one electrified home at a time."

⚠️ High prices? Cut demand, not taxes. Oil & gas prices are soaring again, and governments are proposing to cut taxes, cap prices, and subsidise consumption. But prices are high because fossil fuel supply has dropped. You don’t fix that by pretending energy is cheap, you fix it by using less of it!

Another war. Another fossil shock. As violence escalates in the Middle East, civilians face devastating consequences. But the energy fallout is already hitting Europe. Gas prices up 50% in hours. This is what fossil fuel dependence looks like. 🧵

Yet another attempt to delay climate action by those who don't care about the future of the planet, about reaching climate targets, or about creating an economy that's successful in sectors that matter tomorrow. This is not compromise, this is failure. This is not leadership, this is giving up.

ETS2 is our insurance net - it only kicks in if there is more demand for emissions than we agreed should be the limit. It will be extremely difficult to reach emissions targets if ETS2 is delayed. Sacrificing a system that ensures real reductions by 2030 for a weak climate goal 2040 is absurd.

The 2040 agreement in the Envi Council is a disaster for emissions reductions in heating and transport - responsible for over one third of EU emissions. We have a plan with clear responsibilities and enforcement - the Emissions Trading Scheme ETS2. Now EU ministers are calling for a delay by a year.

You've nearly reached the end of the thread. Now for the good news: - the text is more explicit about the key climate solutions - renewables and energy efficiency. - In contradiction to weak actions the text keeps 1.5 degree alive: But what miracle will get us there? 5/5

- By prominently listing CCS and nuclear prominently as "zero- and low-emissions technologies", the text creates the conditions for further burning of fossil fuels, as the contribution of these industries will remain very limited. 4/5

- The idea that coal power could be "abated" is completely baseless. - While tripling renewable energy is good, the climate does not care about absolute additions, but about replacing fossil fuels. 3/5

First the bad news: Governments are still in deny of the urgency of acting. - A rapid phase-out of fossil fuels is necessary to protect lives and livelihoods on this earth. - The framework of "calling on" governments appears wholly inadequate. 2/5

Some quick takes on COP28. Deeply disappointing with some silver lining. 1/5
