fascinating development in the context of debates around AI, tech power & worker voice - meta (facebook) agrees trade union workplace access www.ft.com/content/f9dd... agree with @prospectunion.bsky.social that this is potentially the most transformative provision of the Employment Rights Act

the prospect of a vast proportion of the wealth generated being used by musk to fuel a race war across the globe would be a considerable negative externality. I wonder how UK investors have incorporated this into calculations of the value opportunity 🤔

The Government is planning to abolish requirements for companies (including some of the UK's biggest employers) to publish CEO to worker pay gaps, & report on their pay & employment practices. Pretty vital info for unions & responsible investors. Surprising that a Labour govt is proposing this

perception of a lack of interest in making capitalism work for society & the environment has probably been helpful to the Greens in winning voters from Labour, and possibly Reform as well

Some business lobby concerns about the Employment Rights Bill and the day one right to protection from dismissal were understandable, but the hysteria about very unimposing trade union rights embarrasses their entire argument

The risk of attracting lesser people than the current crop of water industry executives seems tolerable for the benefit of sending a firm message about the public service ethos expected of public utility bosses & the limits to indulgence of executive entitlement A missed opportunity!

Much talk of whether British CEOs should be paid more like Americans (median S&P 500 CEO pay about 4 x FTSE 100 equivalent) Meanwhile, majority of American workers think their CEO is overpaid & couldn't last a week in a normal job www.flexjobs.com/blog/post/em...

World inequality database suggests that over the same period, the share of UK pre-tax income captured by the top 1% increased from 7% to about 14% So share of taxes paid by the 1% has increased, but a rise of 1.5 x their share of total incomes to just over 2x isn't that dramatic

Another interesting insight from the HSBC report on attitudes to wealth. Income level considered wealthy in the North East is less than a third of that in London.

Thanks, makes sense - from a UK/Europe perspective, you'd almost prefer it if the tech cultists did represent mainstream opinion, and that these oddball ideas supplanting adminstrative competence as a govt priority reflected a cultural difference unlikely to be replicated. Instead...

Comparative bonus awards at Barclays a nice indicator of how the economy works and in whose interests: For every £1,556 paid to investment bankers, an ordinary employee such as a bank cashier, call centre operative or administrative worker got a quid!

UK right blindly backs Trump & Netanyahu to ‘own the left’ without really caring about the consequences of their actions for the UK. Was always obvious that displacing millions of people in the mid east would mean more pressure on Europe (inc UK) to accommodate refugees

interesting that the share of people in the US and Australia seeing economic inequality as a big problem is similar to Europe, but much more divided along left/right lines. (also interesting that UK/Canada different to US/Aus in this respect)

UK has amongst the worst record for worker participation in business decisions in Europe - there are good grounds to think this worsens inequality and reduces economic productivity (Charts via excellent @cmmonwealth.bsky.social report - www.common-wealth.org/publications...)
