Luke Beardsworth @lukebeardsworth.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
There have been rumours of defections away from Reform UK at LCC for quite some time. There are other councillors who have at least enquired about joining the Conservatives. It’s also been suggested a number of councillors have one eye on Restore Britain - although so far that has come to nothing.

He cites his decision as being in response to the 'scandal' that the party has been embroiled into during his time in office. He is the second councillor to leave Reform UK at Lancashire County Council after Cllr Leon Graham left to join the Conservatives in July.

Reform UK ‘abandons pretence of delivery for Lancashire’ in refugee funding decision
Every opposition party has decided to “call in” the decision - which removes funding, but not people, from Lancashire

The “call in” will see the decision debated again this week - on September 11 of all days - but it is highly unlikely that will be anything other than an opportunity to pick apart the arguments for making decision. Don’t expect it to change.
120
Luke Beardsworth @lukebeardsworth.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
The move won’t affect where the ~700 refugees can be, but it will mean Lancashire doesn’t get funding it previously did. It is hard to see positives - if the decision saved money you could at least see some justification even if you disagreed. It doesn’t. Refugees will stay, LCC has less money.

Statement from Preston City of Sanctuary after today’s decision. It is broadly expected that the decision will be called in - which will mean cabinet has to reconsider the decision. It does not mean they need to change the decision however.

This was passed with recommendation one taken forward. That means that Lancashire County Council will cease management of the schemes for Afghans and Syrian refugees by May 2027. Debate became heated when Reform UK were accused of being xenophobic, which the leader said was out of order.
