They're rosewater, licorice, and violet flavoured, and the original flavour was based on 'cachous' (small breath mints). From Gastro Obscura:
SOAP-FLAVORED GUMTHRILLS GUM ∘ ONTARIOIf you’re tired of coworkers, friends, and family always asking you for a piece of gum, try handing them a purple nugget of Thrills. Canadians say the retro, rosewater-flavored chewing gum tastes like soap, and the company agrees. The box bears the reassuring slogan: “It still tastes like soap!” Fans cite not having to share as a major plus of chewing it.For much of the 20th century, the O-Pee-Chee Gum Company, which also sold trading cards, provided Canadians with Thrills. In the 1950s and ’60s, perfumed flavors like teaberry and violet were common at the candy store, and rosewater-flavored Thrills fit in perfectly. Although floral gum is less desirable these days, if you’re lucky enough to like it you’ll likely get the whole pack to yourself. How to try itThrills is still sold in candy stores and online.

What happens when you get an AI to write goals for you? You get beautifully crafted SMART goals that you don't actually commit to or act on arxiv.org/pdf/2605.12344
As AI tools become embedded in productivity and self-improvement contexts, a pressing question
emerges: what happens when AI does the goal-setting for us? While large language models can
generate goals that are objectively well-formed, the motivational consequences of delegating this cognitively and emotionally significant task remain unknown. In a preregistered experiment (N = 470),
we compared self-authored goals against LLM-authored goals derived from a personal reflection.
Although LLM-generated goals scored higher on SMART criteria (specificity, measurability, achievability, relevance, and time-boundedness; d = 2.26), participants in the LLM condition reported lower
psychological ownership (d = 1.38), commitment (d = 1.19), and perceived importance (d = 1.13).
At two-week follow-up, 72.8% of self-authored participants had acted on two or more of their goals,
compared to 46.6% in the LLM condition. Mediation analyses identified psychological ownership as
the mechanism: it mediated the authorship effect on every downstream motivational and behavioral
outcome, while objective goal quality did not. Critically, individuals low in trait self-efficacy, those
most likely to seek AI assistance, experienced the steepest ownership erosion. These findings reveal a
quality-motivation dissociation in AI-assisted goal-setting and identify authorship preservation as a
design priority for AI tools deployed in identity-relevant, behavior-dependent tasks.Stacked bar chart comparing the proportion of goals actioned between "self" and "LLM" conditions.

"self" condition: 29.6% actioned 3 goals, 43.2% actioned 2 goals, 20.1% actioned 1 goal, and 7.1% actioned 0 goals.

"LLM" condition: 17.8% actioned 3 goals, 28.8% actioned 2 goals, 31.9% actioned 1 goal, and 21.5% actioned 0 goals.Table of results, showing that self-set goals outperform LLM-set ones on commitment, psychological ownership, importance, self-efficacy, and follow-through. The table also shows that self-set goals are seen as more difficult, and LLM-set goals have a marginally-significant advantage on subjective goal clarity.

This table can be found as Table 1 in the linked article, AI-Assisted Goal Setting Improves Goal Progress Through Social Accountability.

A recent AMJ about how to encourage advice seeking: Emphasize the benefits to the advice-giver. Seems particularly relevant given the great decline of human advice seeking journals.aom.org/doi/10.5465/...

Abstract
People are often reluctant to network or seek advice from others due to anticipated emotional discomfort. Yet, most prior research is either vague regarding the exact nature of such discomfort or identifies mainly proself (i.e., self-oriented) concerns. Not sufficiently addressed, though, are prosocial concerns about advice seeking as an inequitable exchange that potentially burdens the advice giver. Paradoxically, advice givers have a lot to gain from providing advice. To address this “inequity illusion” of advice seeking, we integrate prosocial impact and equity theorizing. We propose that a prosocial framing of advice seeking (i.e., the idea that advice seeking is beneficial for advice givers) functions as a psychological equity restoration technique that lowers the advice seeker’s “burden anxiety”—thereby increasing advice-seeking behavior. We further examine whether prosocial framing is more potent in relational settings that amplify worries about potential inequity, such as with higher-status or unfamiliar advice givers. Using a multi-study experimental design, including two randomized controlled field experiments, we find that prosocial framing of advice-seeking benefits leads to increased advice seeking, mediated by burden anxiety. We also find initial evidence that prosocial framing is a more potent motivator when the advice giver has higher relative status or is more unfamiliar.

No.
Betteridge's law of headlines is an adage that states: "Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no." It is based on the assumption that if the publishers were confident that the answer was yes, they would have presented it as an assertion; by presenting it as a question, they are not accountable for whether it is correct or not.

felix cartal on AI music. i love the quote from yanagi: "the beauty of an object is inseparable from the way it was made."
suno sucks. aside from the obvious part of it being trained off stolen music, i’ve been trying to put into words why suno makes me simultaneously depressed and angry as an artist.

there’s a philosophy from writer Soetsu Yanagi:

“the beauty of an object is inseparable from the way it was made.”

and ultimately I think what annoys me about AI is that it replaces the artist’s process. when you listen to a song, what you’re subconsciously doing is hearing all the decisions that an artist made. even if some of those decisions are accidental or mistakes… they could still be a beautiful thing. some of my favourite Beatles records are because of their human errors <3.

when we consume art that we love, we’re feeling all the things that went into creating it and if that’s not there then it’s hard to feel anything about it at all. if the way something is made is attached to what it is, AI basically removes that and makes the art un-enjoyable. this is also why if you like an AI song unknowingly and you find out after that is AI, it just kinda sucks now? like you feel like you got scammed.

give me the mistakes, give me the process, give me the raw, give me the struggle.

otherwise what’s the fucking point?

loyalty isn't enough under competitive kleptocracy
"Russian corruption functions as a competitive system where rival state-oligarchic clans fight to monetize state access beneath a surface of loyalty to Putin. Amid a shrinking economy, this kleptocratic rivalry has damaged regime priorities like national security, popular support, and economic stability. Notable procurement scandals between 2012 and 2016 in Spetsstroi, Roskosmos, and the railways drained billions. Furthermore, rampant fraud by senior bank managers since 2014 triggered widespread bank failures, prompting aggressive government responses including the closure of Spetsstroi, the dismissal of top figures like Yakunin, and the revocation of licenses for roughly 10 percent of Russian banks."
