📝 How do plants respond to hormone signals instead of cellular noise? 🧵 doi.org/g9k3kf You might expect the instructions a cell receives to make a flower to be precise, but the response to those instructions isn’t. #Botany #PlantScience 🧪 #InBrief (1/11)
The cover image shows flower buds forming from the stem cells of Arabidopsis thaliana. To show how randomly the gene DR5 is turned on, researchers used two identical copies of the gene—one glowing blue, the other yellow. In some cells, both are active (appearing white), while others show only blue or only yellow, highlighting the randomness. Still, DR5 is generally active where the hormone auxin tells it to be. All cell nuclei are marked in magenta. Image credit: Shuyao Kong.

🔬 This field photo of a maize cross was shared by Cecilia Lara Mondragon from the University of Tübingen. 💡 Maize is about 95% wind-pollinated by pollen by neighboring plants. For controlled crosses, the female ear is covered, and pollen from a selected male plant is manually applied to the silks.
