Honestly one of the worst parts about calamity imploding is that it sorta killed my motivation to collect plushies considering that 2 out of the 5!I've got so far are cal plushies, which are sadly just kinda stinking the collection now.

Adding leaf bracer to a game where cure is even more spammeable than in KH1 was also quite a hilarious mistake. They literally had to make the superbosses break the rules of the game (remnant's cure copying and mysterious figure's tornado+doom) just to prevent cure spam.

A dodge that gives you enough Iframes to chain it into another dodge with no gaps is the kind of shit you'd see in a low budget kusoge, old osaka team was truly something man

To this day I'll never understand what they were thinking with Aqua and Ventus' dodges in BBS. I've never seen any other action game give you what is essentially on-demand invincibility

You can’t even comprehend how important Eien ni Hen’s work is to the fan translation community. Romancing SaGa, Fire Emblem, Sakura Wars, Tear Ring Saga, Glory of Heracles, Dragon Force II, Dark Half, Beyond Oasis, Psi-O-Blade, Arabian Nights, and so much more. What a loss. Rest in peace.

Hell, another good example would be the 3ds and switch FE games, where skills that simply give small flat stat boosts are easily the best in the game just by virtue of how many thresholds it helps you reach. "More impactful" skills like a guaranteed Luna would simply break the game.

Menacing and Warding reforges are only 4% or 4 flat respectively, yet difference in power between pre-goblin tinkerer and post-goblin tinkerer is really notorious. There's clearly a right way of designing small power increases, it would be insincere to pretend it has never been done right before.

Ngl i never understood the whole "Oh small % increases in games are bad game design because they barely make a difference", like, terraria is one of the most popular games of all time and it does exactly that, and not only does it do it, it freaking nails it.

recently I came to a realization about why "smart devices" are so shitty if you take an appliance that creates some sort of physical output, and connect it to a network, what you've actually done is invent a new kind of printer and printers are, of course, the devil's machines

I've been preaching about it for a long time, but imo the best kinds of videogames are those that make people want to revisit them over and over again. Soul can have an impact on that, i love Majora's Mask after all, but there's a reason the most revisited ones are also the most fun to play

KH 358/2 days has more artist merit than pretty much every other game in the series imo, but good luck finding a single person willing to play through it more than once.

I could mention countless examples really. Genealogy of the Holy War is a more interesting game than Thracia at a glance, but there's a reason whenever people revisit the kaga era games, thracia is the one they gravitate towards, it's just the better game here.

Soul can help a game stand out, and it can be what turns a good game into a masterpiece. But a soul can't do anything on its own, not without a solid body to hold it. Ultimately, time decided that super metroid was the one to endure, even if it's more "videogamey" than Metroid II
100
Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
There's a reason as to why games with very strong ludonarratives such as metroid II are barely explored nowadays while Mario 64, a game that drops you on the most cheap videogame-looking videogame levels ever is still played and adored by many after so many years
100
Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Hot take maybe kinda not really, but people tend to overvalue the importance of ludo narrative synergy in videogames. It's quite nice when it's there, but it does not create a masterpiece by its own and it never will

Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Just because it's a difficulty setting doesn't mean it should go against the main point of the game. Easy modes are supposed to tone down the punishment of certain design choices, not remove them outright.

Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Doesn't this mean there's literally 0 reason to engage in non-mandatory combat since you'll always be pushed into a good stat threshold anyways. Did they not think this shit through

Bleh, enough venting, it's just that, I've meet so many wonderful people and learned so much about myself thanks to my experiences with this series, and now it has mutated into something I don't care for anymore, it sucks really.

Even three houses could've been seen as a one-off experiment in the same way as geanology, but then many of its aspects carried over to engage despite not fitting that game's mold, and now with fortune's weave they're quadrupling down on it.

Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I think the early reports that the game was around 100-160 hours in length is what made me clock out honestly. That's not fire emblem. Say what you will about awakening, and I have, the game's dogshit, but idk, i feel like it was still a fire emblem game.

From Software runs the entire industry because they were willing to let Dark Souls 2 be an exploded test tube experiment and didn't immediately throw their team into a furnace.

They pulled this shit with three houses too, releasing the game without a high difficulty option and patching it in months after release. They learned their lesson with engage and had maddening on release there, so why did they unlearn said lesson???

This is like, the first time i outright can't buy a game I'm (cautiously) interested in, so it does sting a bit. I'll just have to hope switch 2 emulation becomes a thing soon because my desktop would probably be cracked enough to run it without much hassle, this thing's strong

Hell I'm probably on that same boat with certain mechanics too, I for the life of me can't tolerate when stuff like sprinting or holding objects is done through a toggle button rather than a held button. Sure, the former is less strain to your fingers, but idk, it doesn't feel quite right.

Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
I can't tell if some of those takes come from personal experiences of more obsuse games really clicking with them or if it's just for the sake of being a contrarian. I always hope for the former because it tends to lead to much more interesting discussion, as long as they're not an ass about it

Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
While bluesky is by far the best place I've seen for game design discussion, it does come with the downside of some folks in here being so against anything that could be considered mainstream that they end up overcorrecting into having some of the weirdest takes I've ever seen

Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Also please don't skip titles just because "they're too old", you are allowed to play games release before the 2010s, i promise it won't bite you, god. Also also avoid picking the experimental title as your first or it'll make it harder for you to get into the rest of the games.

Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
So, here's my general rule of thumb if you want to get into a game series: Is its story and continuity important? Play on release order Is its story and/or continuity not important? Play whichever ones look cool to you but try to play on release order whenever possible

This is why i think conquest Mozu and engage Anna are probably the most interesting modern trainees so far. Mozu has a monopoly on the archer line and is able to give it to a few of your units for lategame relevancy, and Anna is a money printer, which while not necessary, it still feels good to use.

Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
IMO trainees are at their best when they bring something unique to the table, such as mareeta's Prf and skills, or FE3 tiki's dragonstone gimmick. Someone like nino is not interesting in comparison because all you're getting by investing on her is just a shittier version of Pent.

Luisar @luisar2002.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I don't think there's any issue with trainees in Fire Emblem being suboptimal, that isn't their point, they're instead just meant to be cool rewards for investing into something that was initially unimpressive. My issue is when said trainees end up being very boring design-wise

"Reviewing an AI made translation" is like repairing a trainwreck VS building a new train from scratch. If you want the end result to be shiny and neat, you're better off just building it new from scratch.

Fun fact: "Reviewing an AI made translation" is more work for translators than just translating it themselves, because AI translations do not pass the sniff test beyond the most superficial. It's a loophole companies use as an excuse to underpay translators, and nothing else.
