A weird situation. All day we're expecting the #U.S. to #sanction the #ICC, then it does not happen. Trump delivers a self-aggrandising meandering speech at the #UNGA. Mentions the court but stops at a general critique. Now, a limbo. Is this a delay? Or an abandonment of the idea?I guess we'll see.

This is the culmination of investigations started in 1999, lest not forget this. 27 years and two tribunals later, victims get a verdict. You may like it or not, but I believe the takeaway is always the same: this complex criminal proceedings take time. Justice takes time.

I had students approach me just today saying they appreciate my firm and justified stance on this (as I have a 10-min argument about why I don't want it in our classroom, and why they shouldn't either). Fight it. Some students will back you, and they are rejecting it too. Don't just roll along.

We should not tolerate a condition in which all eyes are on international law, but precisely when it is needed the most, it remains unenforceable. Keeping calm and carrying on should mean keeping our eyes open not only about what is desirable for the world, but also on what can realize such desires here and now. If we offload that responsibility and bask in our own legal purity, we do that only at our own expense.
