However most community run servers (which valve explicitly allows, they let everyone host their own multiplayer servers if they want) the setting is off, letting everyone play with a bunch of mods and sprays on if they so wish. Anyway I hope that was informative.

Well the thing about tf2 mods is that the game code is separate from asset mods. So what you could replace was textures and models but you couldn't access game logic. Either way, this could be used for exploits and at one point valve just put all their official servers onto official assets only.

like when i was working on the water base in my quake thing i never got too far into, I leaned into running the game palletized and a blocky resolution. The limitations made things look way better than running it full 8k resolution with full colour range. Like sure yeah it's not 320x240 but come on

Usually most games are fine at their native resolution, I'm fine with bumping up the resolution on portable systems like the psp or 3ds depending on the game. like psup2i is just terrible looking at native because most of the art in that game was designed for a ps2.
