The CrystalWorks mineral for today is native Silver cds.dl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/cw_page/exampl… Pyrite was the structure of the day on 13th March. Pyrite is a very common mineral. But if you follow the #365Minerals link to Mindat you will see […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Stick representation structure display for Pyrite - ferrous sulfide (FeS2). Pyrite has a cubic structure with Pa-3 symmetry. The structure is displayed looking down the b-axisAn alternative depiction of Pyrite. Here the Fe2+ cation are shown as isolated units to emphasise the presence of (S2)2- anions in the structure

Very hazy earlier this morning with a distinct smell of smoke - probably from wild fires in North Wales. Somehow reminded me of some old CrystalWorks pages. Turns out I was thinking about Karrikinolide the germination promoting molecules #Crystallography365 […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

The CrystalWorks entry for today is Diaspore in the #365Minerals collection cds.dl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/cw_page/exampl… Diaspore has the formula AlO(OH). Its polymorph, Boehmite is also in the collection. The isostructural Fe analogue of Boehmite, Lepidocroite, is also included.
The structure of Diaspore as displayed by JSmol within CrystalWorksThe structure of Leipidocrocite. This is the Fe analogue isostructural with Boehmite, both of which are in the #365Mineral ollection

I will probably be away from good internet connectivity for a while so have been checking out other #365Minerals entries. Covellite (formally CuS) is the entry for 4th June. Actually it is quite complex with S2 (S2-1 or S2-2 ?) units as well as (possibly) […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Covellite displayed by JSmol via the CrystalWorks interface. It has a layered structure with the layers bridged by S2 units. There are also S dianions. Cu has two environments. One is 4-coordinate with C3v symmetry. The other is 3-coordinate with D3h. The oxidation states of the Cu centres is matter of dispute.

The #365Minerals entry for today (2nd August) is Vivianite, a particular favorite. Amongst other things it is found on corpses in iron coffins and also tends to block the valves in sewage treatment plants.
A picture of Vivianite generated by the JSmol display package from within CrystalWorks. It shows the 2-D layered nature of mineral.

@sellathechemist To continue the Italian theme, the 23rd June #365Mineral entry is Tenorite (CuO). But it is worth going on a treasure hunt in Mindat and maybe going down a killer rabbit hole mine in Perthshire

Franklinite is a Spinel and its type location is Franklin Furnace, New Jersey, which is named after Benjamin Franklin. Had hoped it was named after Freewheelin' Franklin from the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. @sellathechemist may recall from his Twittering […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
