Another memoir from my trip to the VEC in Rome last month — the beautiful Third Library.
Photo of a long gallery library with ornate black and gold shelves from the nineteenth century, housing predominantly eighteenth century books.

Beautiful paper-covered book spotted on my recent trip to the VEC in Rome. 😍😍😍 Stand by for more pics of lovely books from my trip to Rome!
A book in the process of being taken off the shelf — the archivist’s hand is visible. The book is one of a set which all have paper covers printed with a design that resembles small flying insects or perhaps birds in red and green ink. The paper itself is a creamy colour, and the spines visible on the other books in the set have darkened.

1788 Spanish recipes from Manuela Gonzalez: miel rosada, buñuelos de viento, pan rey, distilled cider. The Pan Rey recipe looks like a recipe for Rosca de Reyes, Three Kings Day cake.

If you have ever wondered why archival photography is 'expensive' please know that to capture 3 images has taken nearly 2 hours.

It's great to see how many archives/libraries are partnering with Universities on Collaborative Doctoral Awards, they're a brilliant way to open up archive/library collections to wider audiences This opportunity with the British Jesuit Archives and @ies-sas.bsky.social looks especially interesting

Some of the recently repackaged relics in the British Jesuit Archive looking like Christmas baubles when you get them out of the attic each year.
A storage box containing 48 small relics in individual compartments. The relics are jewel-like, with glass fronts.

Pushkin, the St Beuno’s cat finds the warmest flagstones. Everyone (including a lady in a wheelchair) negotiates round him.

I’ve just spent the last few days helping preserve the rare books at St Beuno’s in North Wales. Tomorrow is a day off so plan to visit castles — I’m thinking Caernarfon, Beaumaris or Conwy but doubt I can manage all 3. Which to choose?

On either side of the fireplace are bays of bookshelves containing old books, mainly bound in leather. Photo of a worktop with 4 old books in the process of being taped up with unbleached linen tape
