As a fellow tile seeker, I want to see this combo?!

Have just learnt that the 'Queen's Chain' was not named for Queen Victoria and is therefore now the 'King's Chain' and I am not OK with it.

I remain dubious. Seismicity requires flex in the materials, not just the joints.

I want a system where we don't do 1 hour in one night, we do 5 minutes per night for 12 nights instead. Would be a PITA for arranging international meetings, but that's always a PITA anyway, so I can live with that.

So "bills have generally taken longer at the Committee of the whole house stage". How much longer? If most of the use of urgency was in the first 100 days then surely there's time to let things take a little longer?

New graffiti spotted in Kilbirnie, in large blue letters on a white fence: LUXON SUX FARTZ = DIRTY WORK Not sure where the dirty work fits in, but I appreciate the brevity

Flashbacks...
Cover of Upton Sinclair's book 'The Jungle', a rough painting of sides of meat hung on factory hooks with a child and faces and eyes of processing workers in the background. The nearest worker holds a knife with blood on it.

Anyone else keep reading these as "Wellington Boys"?

This is a point I try to emphasize with students in my energy policy class. Climate change is important but carbon is not the only thing that matters. Combusting fossil fuels means particulate matter and other pollutants that currently kill millions/yr. And extraction and transport enviro impacts.

I think that is the reason, yes. And by "noone else", they mean "noone else likely to attract new voters". There are plenty of smart competent MPs in Labour, but appealing to voters as a leader is a different skill set. Also, alas, not necessarily the same skill set as maintaining caucus unity.

That guillotine stunt was not OK. I immediately had flashbacks to the "mock gallows" put up in parliament grounds during the Covid occupation. It's not OK now just because it's for someone _I_ think is despicable.

How is it legal to describe socks as "Merino" when the merino content is only 7%?

My daughter looked at an academic book I brought home and asked "is this like a journal that's self-published?" which is the best unintentional burn I've heard in a while 🤣 (Because, I mean, she's not wrong...)

My experience as a co-owner of an area of regenerating bush is that getting hunters in to manage pigs is difficult. We want them all gone, but they usually like to leave some so there will be more to hunt another time.

Fascinating! (But my favourite bit was: "Estimating the value of housing services from long-term lease data is a complex task. ... a part of the payment was specified in live hens, which did not depreciate with the currency.")

Even if that were true - I don't disagree with all of it - it doesn't change the reality that perpetuating the myth of under or slow investment in new generation, and dry year risk, only serves fossil fuel and industrial interests, not energy poor consumers.
010
Dr Lucy Tel-Bar @lucytelbar.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
Sure. But you're treating the OECD as some neutral commentator. They are not. Again, this "dry year risk" bullshit is perpetuated in the interests of industrial gas users. It doesn't, and won't, help families in energy hardship at all.

"Sitting on" implies they're good to go and they're just choosing not to, rather than the other constraints that slow construction. Those reports ... whose interests do they really serve?
010
Dr Lucy Tel-Bar @lucytelbar.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
I know electricity is unaffordable for many households. But when you perpetuate the myth that generators aren't building, or aren't building fast enough, it helps those promoting fossil solutions like LPG terminals.
100
Dr Lucy Tel-Bar @lucytelbar.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
From all I see, the constraints are external (availability and assessing suitability of sites; the (truly glacial) process of RMA approval, rather than prioritising dividends.
200
Dr Lucy Tel-Bar @lucytelbar.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
Like most generators, they have a swathe of new generation underway. If the data centre is profitable, they will have more money to spend on more generation. I'm not keen on data centres, but I'm tired of the myth that generators aren't building.

Doctors generally want women to get a mammogram before they'll prescribe HRT. So although mammograms are not compulsory in general, I wonder if this woman's reluctance got in the way of treatment she did want.

I guess I don't dislike Hipkins. I'd happily, I don't know, talk to him if I ended up next to him on a hike or something. But that doesn't mean I want him running the Labour Party, or the country. Conversely, I can imagine there might be people I wouldn't specially like who'd do either job well.

I'll interpret the lack of response - and the apparent need to repeat back to me what I just said but with more verbiage - as either "yes, I'm AI" or "AI writes all my content because I have no original thoughts of my own". Either way, ew, block.

Energy-intensive businesses may well (think they) want an LNG terminal. The question is why they think anyone else should have to pay for it? (No I haven't read the piece - I don't subscribe, and not about to start now).
Headline from The Post 17 June 2026, "Why New Zealand needs an LNG terminal, and needs it soon", by John Carnegie, chief executive of Energy Resources Aotearoa, an industry body representing energy-intensive businesses. There in an image of an LNG tanker at a dock with a caption "Liquefied natural gas tankers like this one ply the oceans delivering LNG to industrial users the world over - soon to include New Zealand under current Government plans".
