Ah yes but it took me 24 days of the slow but sure realisation that I… I don’t like jam. In the morning, at least. On an occasional scone in the afternoon, sure, but how often does that happen? I now have approx 20 small pots of jam / conserve / spread sitting in the cupboard. So there’s that.

Just been watching a documentary about this; I was similarly perplexed. Turns out houses made of brick don’t do well in heavily earthquake-prone areas. Wooden frame flexes, so is therefore the most common in Southern California. An insurance nightmare, I imagine.

Ours had a “catastrophic event” before Christmas and had to be fully replaced. We only moved in a year ago; the previous owners would be delighted if they knew they’d dodged that very costly bullet. Wishing your boiler many more years of good health and service.

These snowshape maker things are great; we never seem to get more than a dusting of snow here, but they seem to keep the kids happy (to be fair, I like using them too). The resulting creations are about 10cm tall at most - we just gathered snow from the top of the car. Small scale snow fun!

Oh, the darkness is already in. The (1200cal a day) diet has seen to that. Sparkly lights don’t make you fat, but apparently I’m not allowed them either. And we’re now skint after Christmas. So I’ll just sit here til payday, nibbling on a Ryvita crispbread, in the dark. #thatsthespirit

Fully invested in The Traitors, having never watched it before. The giant barber with the 90s haircut! The Sugababes tribute act Traitors (albeit now a duo rather than trio)! It’s the obligatory de-Christmassing weekend, if tradition is to be upheld. For now, all the fairy lights are still on and the tree is still bedecked. It’s so magically cosy. Bleak midwinter outside. Wonder why we don’t keep decorations up til the end of February.

Have now resumed normal diet, having gone full Very Hungry Caterpillar and eaten the entire Christmassy food contents of my house (plus my parents’ house, plus my in-laws’ house) over the past two weeks.
