Have we entered a new era of compression? 4 teams in #CLIC2025 early leaderboard beat VTM, not in PSNR, but in ELO and perceptual quality. VTM used to be the gold standard. That may no longer be true. This slide from Théo Ladune nails it. @clic-challenge.bsky.social #CLIC2025 #ImageCompression

The “AV1 is a disaster” myth Here’s what’s actually true: - SVT-AV1 is fast, fully multithreaded and packed with SIMD. - It scales beautifully on modern CPUs. - It beats x264, x265, and VP9 in bitrate vs runtime. AV1 on CPU isn’t a disaster. It’s quietly winning.

Are generic codecs holding us back? We built walls of complexity but overfitted codecs are leaping right over those limits. What if the future of compression isn’t more versatility, but custom solutions tailored for each challenge? Are you ready to take off the training wheels?

Seeing the drama on LinkedIn concerning SQL, I couldn’t resist

What if Canada had its own CDN? Digital sovereignty, “maîtres chez-nous” of the internet age. Serving local broadcasters, hosting national culture, and keeping our bits and our dollars at home. Sweden’s looking into it. France already did. Why should we depend on the US for everything? #never51

For those new to it: Daala was an experimental, open-source video codec developed by Mozilla and Xiph It pushed codec tech forward and eventually influenced AV1s design (Image: “Rainbow vomit tiger” accurately summarizing how our daily codec experiments felt.) #Daala #AV1 #OpenSource #CodecDev

TIL the saying we had on @mozilla.org’s Daala team—“Another day, another Daala”—was a twist on the song “Another Day, Another Dollar.” Unlike the song’s predictable daily grind, our codec work was anything but routine. Each commit was a new codec, literally #Daala #Mozilla #VideoCompression #TIL

Hey Bluesky! I’m Luc, a video compression researcher near Montreal. Coauthored AV1 and co-designed the dav1d decoder. Expect AV1 content, news, coding tricks, and memes. #AV1 #VideoCompression #OpenSource
