He continued down the hall until only one door remained. This one looked heavier and older than the other doors so far. The brass knob had a worn patina. As he pulled it open, a cool draft crept up the steps. They were lit with more fire key sconces, and he could see that though the steps closest to him were wooden, they transitioned to stone about two thirds of the way down. At the end of the steps, he could see a solid stone archway to the right. Cautiously he reached for the rail and closed the door behind him.
The steps echoed with a dull thud as he descended. It smelled earthy and damp. A soft dripping sound echoed through from beyond the archway. Something rumbled, a low sounds that shook the very steps. Sherman clung tight to the handrail. He glance back up the stairs. Was it really safe to be coming down here?
