The boss thought over his words as he sipped the dark, amber liquid which swirled in his glass. “And what of the woods?”
“I… I’m sorry?” the question threw him off guard.
“Do you know what they’re called?”
“Briar Woods?”
“That is the technical name, I suppose. Isaac, what do the locals call the Briar Woods?”
“The superstitious ones refer to it as the Devil’s Forest. They say at the darkest hour is when the demons and monstrous beasts lurk through the trees. Your Mrs. Wayle must not have been a superstitious woman. Those who step too close, or wander its depths alone, always run the risk of forever disappearing into the night’s star specked embrace.”
“Are you a superstitious man, Mr. Herron?” Felix asked.
He raised the glass to his lips and gave a knowing grin. “There’s a few creatures who haunt the nights which I believe in the existence of.”

Felix paused his vocal thoughts, pressing the back of his head further into the cracked, leather chair. “Oh Shirley, I feel like I’m between a rock and a hard place,” he sighed. “There’s too much going on that have to work through. A rise in kidnappings, an underground crime organization, my department that would rather look the other way when things get too superstitious, a rebirthed cult that’s seeking immortality, vampires? What’s next? Ghosts? Frankenstein’s monster? Or maybe you’re secretly a shape shifter, seeking refuge in my home from some unspeakable deed.”
Felix removed his glasses, then rubbed his hands against his face and muttered, “All this because I decided to follow Jasper one night instead of listening to stay put for once.”

Nothing like traumatizing my main character as he hides under the bed within an old abandon cabin in the woods as he realizes the murderous cult he disbanded five years prior never truly died. #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity #WriteSky

The detective pressed a hand against his mouth to mute his sudden panic, watching as the figure’s cloak came to rest just outside the edge of his hiding spot. The crimson fabric began to fold in on itself as the figure knelt down to inspect under the bed. Even through his blurred vision, Felix could still recognize that mask. The crude markings which resembled a twisted smile, carved onto the pale wood, enveloped in the cloak's shadows.
All those years ago, he watched as the last of those masks were burned in front of him, signaling the end of the cult. He could still feel the fire as the department burned away every last trace of them. Or so he thought.
The masked figure tilted their head as they analyzed the detective’s frightened figure before placing a gloved finger to their crooked smile, mimicking a show of silence. With their other hand, the figure delicately placed the glasses on the dusty floor between them. Felix remained frozen as he watched the mask disappear from slight, and the fabric unfold, carrying the figure out of the room, out of the cabin, back into the moonlit night.

One of my favorite very specific tropes is a doctor turned into a vampire, and the moral turmoil such an event can potentially cause. So I figured why not have my main character interact with an individual who holds such a trope #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity #WriteSky

Soft colored light bulbs were lit against the walls in holders modified from where candles once rested. Even the trim where the floor met the wall held an intricate, swirled design which added a subtitle tie-in to the vampiric hallway. “You must be quite the connoisseur of arts with all these paintings,” Felix noted, taking a moment to study one which, to the detective’s untrained eyes, looked to show a man drowning in the river while his farm burns in the background.
“Oh these,” she gave a light laugh as if they were part of some inside joke he was not aware of. “Most of them are gifts, or forms of payment. Like I said, I’ve earned my status through community, and sometimes bartering goods or service is just as formidable of payment as money.”
