We all use and profit from slave labour nowadays from buying stuff made in the whole of Asia to the über, deliveroo and other more or less legally employed couriers and others. We hardly have the right to be righteous about past forms of slavery.

they only want the cheap dog passport

Lucie @lucie89.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
due mostly to people thinking that the dog passport is too expensive or being fed up with queueing at the airports . But you know what : these aren’t serious reasons to make an important political decision !

I seem to remember Brits being encouraged to move to the Falklands after the 1980s war, because so few people/Brits really lived there .

This bit of Amhurst Rd , Hackney, was full of traffic and now thanks to ULEZ and a programme of replanting , it is a great place to walk along !

Ah but it happened ! And unfortunately , some mistakes can never be put right ! Who would start the argument and divide the country again ? Because the divisions are still there and the mistrust of the EU and the ignorance and the superiority complex ….

Ridiculous prejudice ! I have asked before if 75% of Boston inhabitants had now died but no one has confirmed . And be careful : you will be old one day !

Your sources make you give too much importance to a bunch of nasty idiots and help them out by repeating and spreading out every nonsense they come out with.

Lucie @lucie89.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
The initial poster felt necessary to remark that a nasty idiot is the child of immigrants. Why ? He is a nasty idiot whatever his origin and this should not be used as an argument . How could that mean that I agree with the nasty idiot ?

I don’t support at all Reform UK (and it is worrying that you still can’t understand that ). But I make no distinction between their members or supporters, based on their skin colours or their origins because that is discriminatory ! And this was my point !

Lucie @lucie89.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
You are wrong on both counts. I suggest you stop following British media

Lucie @lucie89.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
This was not the point I was making and it is very sad that you and others could not understand . At no point did I disagree about the nastiness from Reform UK. Make an effort and really read what I wrote , without prejudice

You misunderstood my point . I was opposing, as a general principle, the attitude which expects British citizens, who happened to be children of immigrants, to behave or think in a certain way. They should not be treated differently. It didn’t mean at all that I agreed with them .

Lucie @lucie89.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Reform has no poeer. If it wasn’t for the media reporting every idiotic things they say, they would only be a bunch of idiots that nobody listens to

I know what you mean but I disagree on principle: children born and living in the UK have the right (not an advantage) to become British ; they also have same right to their own opinion as anyone else, without their origin being thrown at them

Lucie @lucie89.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
The UK can’t try it because it is not on offer. You can’t cherry pick bits from the EU that you would like and leave the left-overs to others

Lucie @lucie89.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Why pissed ? It is this way in every country. Some people pay to acquire citizenship in order to vote. It is a choice your friend could have made if this was important to her. (Ireland and GB relationship are a different matter for obvious historical reasons)

Lucie @lucie89.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
??? Is that supposed to be a rational argument ??? I am a foreigner. My children were born here and are fully British.

Many Brits in the EU are of working age and only out there for a few years, hence a legitimate right to vote in the UK. I am French and always accepted I could not vote in general British elections. It has always been this way. The vote of non resident commonwealth citizens in the UK is an anomaly

But these people are still around and you still can’t count on their votes.

Lucie @lucie89.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
I don’t agree. I believe they were people who thought it made no difference one way or another, i.e. people who didn’t know what the EU is about, what it meant economically, the values it represented, the difference it made to their own life : really not so different from the Brexiters.

Lucie @lucie89.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Not so narrow, unfortunately, if you include the 13 million who didn’t bother to vote . And some of the lies are still circulating and being believed even among pro EU, because they listened to them for 40 years.

The UK-USA medicines deal obliges the NHS to pay much higher prices for new medicines. This is “one of Brexit’s hidden costs”. EU countries negotiated collectively with the USA, with much greater leverage. Britain negotiated alone with no clout and lost out. ukandeu.ac.uk/the-uk-us-me...

The UK-US medicines deal and the hidden costs of Brexit - UK in a changing Europe
Vilija Vėlyvytė argues that the UK-US medicines deal which will see the NHS pay more for new medicines is an unexpected cost of Brexit.

Next step : give up your car and shout out loud for better public transport everywhere ! There are many places I can never visit in the UK because I don’t drive.

I am a pedestrian, I have never learnt to drive and I live in London. My life has been blighted by cars, the noise, the dirt, the space they occupy. I knew it, but one gets so used to busy roads, I am myself surprised at the enormous relief I feel, walking through quieter streets.

Naturalisation is not needed, only applying for a residential status, like the Settled Status in the UK. The Guardian loves these sentimental stories but doesn’t explain why she did not apply in time. I am angry at Brexit but I am also angry at people who thought Brexit would not affect them

Since water services were sold off by Thatcher to be run for private profit, the water companies have: - amassed debts of over £50bn - paid £78bn to shareholders - raised their CEO pay to £1-3 million a year - lose 2.87bn litres of water a day through leaky pipes - polluted EVERY river

The people with longstanding residence but no paper could go through the Windrush scheme and they were getting help. The people in the article were not without ID, they had a polish passport and they would have received communication from their consulate.

A lecturer who could not follow the advertised advice for people in her situation after 2016 ? And who never bothered to acquire some ID papers (when it would have been so easy )? One can’t ‘claim’ a passport and no way would the HO offers a temporary one.

From 2016 onwards, we received regular updates from the HO, from our consulates, from town halls , with posters even in various places. I bet the Polish community worked very hard at informing their citizens in the UK. I repeat it isn’t possible not to have known what they needed to do.

Ridiculous Guardian article : it is impossible to believe that they or their family didn’t hear of Brexit and the need for EU citizens to apply for the EU settled status. It was widely advertised. There was plenty of extra help for older people who had lived here for a long time.

Yes there will be some abuse, yes I totally agree to help out the people who need it, but the system is biased so that people who abuse the system all their life get more. For the ones who have just enough after having worked hard, it is hard to swallow. Easier for the better off to be indulgent.

In other European countries , the private side of health insurance is closely regulated by the state. In the UK, private means the law of the jungle ; look at the water companies, at dental care , at nursing homes , and anything else private : no rules and no control

Of course, these are the people you are more likely to meet in A&E, and other NHS services. I am 75,and I make a very limited use of these services, same goes for the other senior citizens I meet in walking groups and Pilates classes. The % of scroungers and idiots is the same for all ages
