I've published a new piece on the Indo-Pacific under the Trump administration's uncertainty Japan, Australia, South Korea, and the Philippines aren't moving away from balancing China, but they are hedging against uncertainty about the United States -- "allied hedging" gpi.umd.edu/research-imp...

The ASEAN FM meeting with the Myanmar junta FM in Thailand marks a concrete step toward engagement, but some in the group, like Singapore, still demand more progress on 5PC It's not a complete diplomatic coup for the junta, but it's further chipping away on their isolation

My latest in @warontherocks.bsky.social "Despite the junta’s apparent momentum, the Trump administration should refrain from formally recognizing Min Aung Hlaing’s regime, because recognition is more than a symbolic gesture"

Min Aung Hlaing visits Beijing this week to meet Xi, following his earlier India state visit. It's another sign of normalization for the "civilian" regime, but not a significant advance from his last visit to China in 2024 while still head of SAC www.irrawaddy.com/news/asia/my...

India schedules Myanmar dictator Min Aung Hlaing visit Big step in India's engagement to counter China However, it can't be very effective. Despite resistance setbacks, Kaladan in Arakan Army territory, while its clear that MAH listens to Xi first and foremost, not Modi

Sec. Rubio: "We are deeply committed to this partnership.  It is a linchpin and a cornerstone of our global strategy" in India at 🇦🇺🇮🇳🇯🇵🇺🇸Quad FM meeting. Reading his remarks, Quad looks like it did before Trump took an axe to U.S.-India trust. Good to see it’s not dead

Sure seems the administration is looking to replay Venezuela operation. In the context of the Iran stalemate, it’s just wildly foolhardy from a strategic perspective. Cuba isn’t Iran, but a strategy of everything, everywhere all at once (poorly) isn’t retrenchment www.nytimes.com/2026/05/20/u...

No one in Myanmar is fooled, but the junta (in 'civilian' guise) continues begging for international legitimacy. Unfortunately, it may work, especially amid Washington rumors about changes to U.S. Myanmar policy. This remains a dictatorship aligned with China. Nothing more.

I've seen posts with no sympathy for USAID, saying the salaries were too high. I worked in this industry, was DOGE'd, and have many friends in it. Six figures was far from typical. It was an industry driven by idealistic young people making far less than the private sector

Check out @hmarston.bsky.social and I in @foreignpolicy.com, where we analyze Sec. Hegseth's Shangri-La speech and the admin's Indo-Pacific policy. Is this the presidency for the pivot to finally happen? Spoiler: like the MN Vikings, it's probably not our year. foreignpolicy.com/2025/06/10/h...

Xi Jinping finally meets with Min Aung Hlaing in Moscow. The SAC finally got its wish and a big photo op. Meanwhile, on the ground in Myanmar, the resistance continues to hammer the junta. China's pragmatism in Myanmar is long gone: english.news.cn/20250509/d55...

China's role in Myanmar is clearly to stop the resistance from overthrowing the SAC. Beijing is fine with EAO controlled periphery, but does not seem to be willing to abide any threat to the Tatmadaw's political role. www.irrawaddy.com/news/myanmar...

Indonesia’s Foreign Policy Under Prabowo: Still Free But More Active?
President Prabowo’s foreign policy thus far paints a picture of continuity – but there are a few longer-term issues to watch regarding China and ASEAN.
