New bike day! Say hello to my new Tern HSD S9i Sport, a delightful e-bike that carries a lot with a smooth and stable ride. (Thanks to @newwheel.bsky.social for a top-tier new bike experience, and @ternbicycles.com for the work you put into creating the HSD!)
A grey bike with knee-high wheels and a rear rack that could fit one passenger. The rear rack has a basket and two panniers. The bike stands proudly in a bike shop, and I’m standing and grinning behind the bike.

Nothing like a good ride along roads less travelled. :-)
An orange Tern GSD cargo bike, panniers fully loaded and a backpack on the rear rack, stands at the side of a rural road. Fields of green and yellow extend into the distance where they meet a sky rivered with clouds.

A series of screenshots with dialogue from Pokémon Emerald. The player character talks to a kid in a house.

Kid: "Where did you come from?"
A prompt appears for the player to pick YES or NO.
Kid: "Yes? YES TOWN? I've never heard of a place like that."

I don’t know why we keep building car lanes when nobody even uses them.
A road that’s eight car lanes wide, mostly empty except for a handful of cars in the distance. Cars sit in a dealership lot along the side of the road, unsold.

Nothing like a Costco run on a cargo bike. :-)

Picked up groceries in my "gray other" (aka Tern GSD) this afternoon, with room to spare!
A long tail cargo bike is parked in a parking stall in front of a sign that says "DriveUp & Go - Check in with the app - Pick Up". The bike's panniers are loaded with grocery bags full of groceries. There's also a grocery basket on the back rack that has a couple empty-looking bags in it.A close up of the rear rack of a bicycle. The left pannier has a full grocery bag and a jug of orange juice in it, and the right pannier has two full grocery bags in it. I have a Tern GSD! It's maybe a bit extra for what I need, but I really enjoy it. I use the panniers that Tern makes to hold groceries and everything else, and I also have a basket that clips to the rear rack for when I'm just quickly dipping into the store and not getting a full cartload.
A grey long-tail cargo bike, seen from the side. A large pannier is strapped to the side of the rear rack, and a basket sits clipped to the top of the rear rack. Other notable accessories include a water bottle attached below the handlebars, a folding bike lock attached to the frame, a yellow bike tracker attached to the frame below the battery, and an e-ink display that reads "Mountain View". The bike is parked aboard a Caltrain in a spot in the bike car.

Replaced the handlebar grips on my Tern with a fresh set of Ergons (this time going with the BioKork material). The wear on the old ones is from just over four years of riding.
Two left handlebar grips. One of them, resting in my hand, is black rubber with a gray rubber inset. The inset has a thatched grip pattern that’s worn down smooth in the centre. The other grip is mounted on a handlebar, with brown cork and a dark gray rubber inset, looking beautiful and new.

In my hometown of Rossland, BC, Canada, there’s a mural on the side of a building downtown advertising a glove company from Lake Placid. Despite its weathered look, the mural is from 2003, a remnant of set decoration from when the movie Miracle was filmed there.
At the end of a snow-tipped row of buildings, a mural on the side of a brick building, with illustrations of a fancy woman and gloves, reads “Berchowitz and Epstein - Manufacturers of Fine Kid Gloves - Accept No Substitute - Lake Placid, Essex County, New York. Our catalogue tells about them free on request. Winter and summer fashions. We provide comfort combined with style and dash. Dealers everywhere sell them.”

Not enough chatbots these days have an Achilles buttock.
In a restaurant with large floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to a colourful nebula, a dismantled maître d' bot lies on a set of steps. His legs are kneeling, his limbless torso is limp, and his head looks up helplessly.

A Chat-O-Mat interface at the bottom of the screen shows the bot's portrait, with the following dialogue: "Ah! You prod me on my Achilles buttock! This you must not do! It pains me vairry much! You must not prod me on my Achilles buttock! It is vairry unfair that I cannot wiggle it away!"

Behind the bot is a dining table, where a singular figure in a tuxedo is enjoying his meal so much his head is lying face down in it.

I miss the days when the server would come by with a tray of apps (and folders and documents) for the table.
The interface for AppleShare, featuring a large icon of a hand holding up a tray with icons of an application, a folder, and a document. A cable connects the box beneath the hand to an original Macintosh, and other computers.

Other parts of this 512x384 monochrome screen include a list of volumes, a list of users, an activity meter, and the current date/time: Fri, May 13, 1988c 7:52:04 AM.

The Bay Bridge, seen from the northwest. The glow of sunrise on the horizon casts a luminous orange over the deep blue of the rippling water. A ferry crosses in the distance. The lamps along the bridge's span and cables shine like stars against the sky yet to be lit by the dawn.

I miss rural newspapers where the headlines were nice and big.
The front page of the "Hooterville World Guardian" newspaper, with the headline "Executive Producer Paul Henning" in text that takes up the entirety of the page. The newspaper is held by hands slightly off-screen in this screencap from the TV show Green Acres.

Had a great Canada Day week, including watching the @bluejays.com beat the Yankees in Toronto.
A view from right field of a magnificent baseball stadium packed with fans. In the outfield, several people are holding the edges of a giant red flag of the proportions two by length and one by width, containing in its centre a white square the width of the flag, bearing a single red maple leaf. The stadium's domed roof is opened up to a city skyline with fluffy clouds floating across a sunny blue sky.The video board at the SkyDome showing "Grand Slam" graphics, with the video feed showing George Springer looking at the cheering fans.

Way-too-early-in-the-morning heading-to-the-airport looks. (I also wore shoes and a jacket to the airport — you will have to imagine those yourself)
Me, a tall figure with medium-length brown hair and peachy skin. I'm wearing a black t-shirt with a white maple leaf with "Canada" printed underneath. I'm also wearing a black denim skirt that goes to just above my knees, black leggings, and red-and-blue striped socks. On my wrist is a silver watch with a red strap, and I'm holding a phone with a purple case, pointing at the mirror in front of me.

step 2: done! I think I have a slight preference to the look of my hand-lettering, but I think I'll stick with this typeface while I refine the legibility of my hand-drawn tag images.
My bike, a gray Tern GSD R14 long-tail cargo e-bike, standing in one of Caltrain's bike cars. The bike has accessories including panniers and a bell with a Canadian flag design. The digital bike tag described earlier in the thread is attached to the seat post.A close-up of the digital bike tag attached to the seat post of my bike. It's an electronic baggage tag, modified with yellow duct tape on its frame and a hand-drawn Caltrain logo. The bike tag's e-ink display now reads "San José Diridon" in large readable letters from the Geneva typeface.

step 1: "complete"
An electronic bag tag, the same one in the first post in the thread. It now has yellow duct tape covering the outer frame, though the duct tape is translucent enough that the dark blue plastic is somewhat visible. On one edge, an approximation of the Caltrain logo is drawn in black and red sharpie. The e-ink display has the text "San Jose" hand-drawn.

I use @caltrain.com to bring my bike to a bunch of different places along the Bay, so I was looking for a good way to tag my bike's destination without having multiple tags. My brilliant wife @ellenteapot.ca came up with the idea to re-use an e-ink baggage tag!

More weird li'l fellows
On a square pink sticky note, six silly faces are sketched in blue pencil. Face 1 is kinda dazed, with a wavy mouth featuring two big teeth on opposite sides. Face 2 is small and grumpy, with eyes like sideways commas. Face 3 has wide eyes, a wide nose, upward-U-shaped eyebrows, and a slight smile. Face 4 has square eyes, an angular nose, and gritted teeth. Face 5 has just pupils for eyes, straight-line eyebrows, and a sad-looking mouth that I shaded in a bit too much, like too much lipstick. Face 6 looks downright devious, with a wavy unibrow, half-circle eyes, and a grin with teeth ready to eat.

Rode my bike from Burlingame to SFO yesterday to catch my flight back to Vancouver! They’ve got a pretty good bicycle parking setup: www.flysfo.com/passengers/g...
Me, with disheveled hair and a huge grin, wearing a black t-shirt that says “ROCK”. I’m standing in front of my grey bicycle parked under a bicycle parking sign, along with a detailed sign underneath listing the bike parking rules, which can be found on the website linked in my post. The bicycle has a black briefcase attached to the front rack, a water bottle, and a little bike computer attached to the handlebars. The rear cargo rack of my bicycle. The left pannier is open, and inside is a grey suitcase with roller wheels. A black briefcase sits on the ground nearby.Me, with neater hair than the first photo, and a plaid button-down shirt. A bag strap adorns my shoulder, and a mask hangs from a strap around my neck. I’m standing outdoors in front of a mural depicting the Golden Gate Bridge with maple leaf textures overlaid and billowing clouds drifting by. The Air Canada logo (a maple leaf inside a circle) and the letters SFO are in the centre of the mural. Behind the mural, an air traffic control tower rises into the sky.

Sketched some weird li'l fellows
A page of about eight roughly-sketched faces, most consisting of just a couple eyes and a mouth, some with eyebrows. From top to bottom, they include: An excited face with an open mouth and two large teeth, bordered by a loopy line. A wild face with eyes akimbo, and a wiggly mouth. A thickly-lined face with glasses, thick sketchy eyebrows, and a curly loopy happy mouth. A face with eyes looking right, tilde-like eyebrows, and a mouth like an unfinished figure eight. A face at an angle, looking up and to the left, with gritted teeth. A serene face, with closed eyes in happy upside-down U shapes, floaty eyebrows, and a blissfully upturned mouth. A small face with diamond eyeballs, angry eyebrows in a V shape, and a grimacing mouth. A face drawn perpendicular to the others, with square eyeballs, U-shaped eyebrows, and a suspicious grin. Other non-face sketches on the page include a stack of cards with a loosely-drawn hand writing on the top card, and a paint bucket pouring out paint.

Big White, British Columbia, Canada. Skiing here this week has been a delight.
A snowy mountain landscape, where powder-swept trees poke out here and there against the white slope. Small details can barely be seen: a sign indicating ski runs, and a T-Bar carrying skiers near the slope's edge. In the background, mountains beyond mountains are lined with trees as they meet the grey puffy clouds above. A sunbeam passes through the layer of clouds, illuminating just a portion of the snow below in a brilliant white that makes the rest of the powder look grey.

First time taking my bike on Caltrain today! I wouldn't have done this pre-electrification — too heavy to bring it up the stairs of a gallery car — but the new trains make it pretty easy.
A longtail cargo e-bike (a Tern GSD R14) with a grey frame is parked inside a train car. The bike stands beneath a train car window, through which can be seen an autumn day with blue sky and a couple clouds overlooking Santa Clara Street in San Jose, California. Accessories on the bike include a weatherproof bag on top of the rear rack, a bike lock mounted to the frame, a water bottle mounted to the stem, and a yellow Knog bike tracker mounted beneath the batteries.

I've been taking a break from posting to take care of other stuff in my life, like this bus stop I adopted. At least once a week I gotta stop by and pick up litter, make sure it's looking clean, and chase away any urban planners trying to reduce service frequency
Me, standing next to a bus shelter. I'm wearing sunglasses, a bright yellow helmet, a bright yellow vest with reflective strips, a beige striped t-shirt, and a winning smile. The bus shelter is made of glass panes with a curved grey metallic frame (with a matching bench) and an angular roof. There's an LED sign showing departures for the 56 Lockheed Martin route in 9 and 30 minutes. In the background, a longtail cargo bike is parked next to the shelter.A blue VTA bus stop sign, indicating route 56 towards Fair Oaks & Tasman and Lockheed Martin. The stop ID is 61014; text on the sign reads "VTA — call 511 — (408) 321-2300 — vta.org". The sign has a no-smoking symbol in its corner. Bolted to the left of the bus stop sign is a smaller metal Adopt-A-Stop sign with "LUCAS WAGNER" written at the top, and an illustrating of a bus shelter with a broom and cleaning supplies. Text on this sign reads "To Sponsor a Bus Stop: bus.stop@vta.org." In the background is a wide tree-lined street with a median.

Got a pretty good photo last night
Above a tree-lined grove, faint green ribbons of aurora borealis illuminate a night sky dotted by points of light from faraway stars. In the grove, silhouettes of vehicles can be seen along the ground, some partially lit by colourful reflections. The light that casts these reflections is also projected upon a large drive-in theatre screen, where a young Anakin Skywalker sits on the counter of a shop across from Watto. Subtitles on the screen read “Outlanders. They think we know nothing.”

Can't wait for the Heritage Minute on the signing of the Treaty of Algeron
A slide with a Canada Post stamp featuring actor John Colicos as the Klingon military leader Kor. Title: "I think I heard about that…". Body text: People tend to overstate their awareness of current events. To get a true measure of news recall, we asked Canadians how much attention they paid to a fake news story - "the Government of Canada signing the Treaty of Algeron". This was not an actual news story from 2023, but rather a Star Trek treaty between the United Federation of Planets and the Romulan Empire. For the rest of this deck we are reporting "true recall" levels, which are calculated by subtracting recall levels for "the Treaty of Algeron" from the recall levels for each news story recorded on the poll.

A bar graph shows the same question and results from the quoted Polling Canada post. An inset reads "Men (22%) and young people (25%) are more likely to report being aware of this "fake news" story".
