Here's the math on high heating oil costs: At $5.90 a gallon, the price at the end of September, a typical household using oil will spend an additional $1,540 this winter. The last time costs were this high was around the start of the Ukraine war.

The One Big Beautiful Bill arrives in Connecticut today. The first cuts from Medicaid are 4,000 noncitizens, including Afghans/Iraqis who helped in American wars. The second group, some 108,000 poor residents, could lose their healthcare starting January of next year.

Hindsight's 20/20. If you're Jason Miyares and you get that Jay Jones text exchange, you absolutely use it. But Miyares had been running a sort of non-partisan tough-on-crime campaign and switched to nonstop ads about the text messages. Looks like the juice ran out.

The Miyares campaign also had a lot to run on, if you believe the AG is a crime fighting office. In October, VCU released a report finding that an AG initiative brought down violent crime in Virginia's most dangerous cities. But the texts sucked up all the oxygen in the ad drive.

In spite of the Jay Jones text scandal, its easy to find voters at the polls in the Richmond suburbs who are voting blue all the way. Two voters tell me his texts are basically a drop in the bucket compared to what they've heard from Republicans, particularly gubernatorial candidate Earle-Sears.

It's likely the Supreme Court will take up the case. Another appeals court, the 5th Circuit, came to an opposite conclusion in January. The Supreme Court typically steps in when there are "circuit-splits," but it could take a while with all the Trump actions, experts said.
