I got up super early this morning to beat the heat and got another 6.2 miles checked off my IAT journey and completed the Sturgeon Bay segment which includes the Eastern terminus. I hiked that part of the segment back on Mother’s Day with my family.

Ice Age Trail update. I’ve been busy this spring and have completed 16% of the 1160 miles. Roughly 183 miles down. Finished up my 26th segment today and have another 4 in progress. Greenbush done and started Parnell today in the Kettle Moraine State Forest. Super humid. Glad I got an early start.

Earned my first IAT patch by completing the Lakeshore Chapter Lakeshore Wanderer. I had to hike segments in this chapter’s territory many of which went along the shores of Lake Michigan.
Long rectangle patch with grey border and a stitched lighthouse against a blue sky with clouds on the left 1/3rd of patch, right side has light blue background with “Lakeshore Wanderer” stitched in black.

Oh I saw the big boulder! Then the next day I saw 3 black bear cubs on the trail ahead of me. They were so freaking cute I wish I had gotten a picture but I didn’t know where mama was so I scared them off right away.

I like big erratics and I can’t deny! If you’ll remember an erratic is a very large rock, exotic to the area, deposited by a melting glacier. A very large boulder the size of a boulder in the middle of the woods with an Leopold bench in front of it. From a wooden bridge, Allen creek, peacefully flowing. Only one blowdown. A dead tree next to the trail completely uprooted and fell across the trail. Had to do a little climbing to get around it. First wooly brown and black caterpillar of the season!

After finishing up the Hartman Creek Segment yesterday I officially crossed the 100 mile mark for the IAT. I only have to do this 11.5ish more times! I began my hiking journey last year around Halloween and I’ve hiked over 200 miles. Incredibly grateful I have a body that has allowed me to do this.

IAT Slinger and Pike Lake Segments. A couple weeks ago I did these two segments out and back for another 5.3 miles. I’m nearing 100. A lot of elevation gain in the PL Segment. Including an observation tower at the top of Powder Hill. PL is part of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

I did half of the Point Beach segment of the IAT as an out and back. I need this segment to complete my first chapter patch but they’re closing 2 miles of trail for forest management until June starting next week. So I changed my plans. I can’t wait to come back when everything is alive.

In the 9.5 weeks since I’ve started hiking I’ve hiked 89 miles, in two different states, in forests, the desert, farmland, towns and cities. Of the 89, 41 of those miles went towards my goal of hiking the complete Ice Age Trail. Might not sound like a lot but I’m 3.5% closer to finishing.

All in all I marked another 2.6 miles off the Ice Age trail bringing my percentage of completion to 3%! I’m hoping for one more hike before the end of the year the week after Xmas. This winter I’ll probably focus on trail communities & the Ahnapee state trail portions as it’s crushed packed gravel.

Algoma reminded me of a the small town in central Wisconsin I grew up in. The lakeshore was windy AF and Lake Michigan seemed particularly angry today. Really made me think of the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald and how terrifying it must have been.

Did my first couple miles of the ahnapee state trail yesterday in Algoma which is partially used in the IAT. The trail part of it was covered in ice but luckily there was enough snow on top to make it not too slippery. wasn’t too cold.

Shoutout to my hiking boots that really were waterproof. Also boo to me cuz my phone fell out of my pocket and I didn’t notice right away so I had to backtrack. It was pretty difficult hiking in the snow, my legs are feeling it. Trekking poles were lifesavers.

It may have snowed 6” over the weekend but that didn’t stop me from checking off part of another segment of the IAT. I got a late start so only did a small portion of the Manitowoc segment. It was beautiful.

I did a bunch of mall walking yesterday but I couldn’t help myself and found a quick 2 mile portion of the IAT to do this morning. I found a helpful list of segments that avoid hunters for deer gun season. Montello is one of the newer segments, added last year.
Trailhead at Montello at the start of my hikeTons of dams in the area. This is the only pic I took. Montello falls (repurposed granite quarry waterfalls), a view of the two waterfalls from the side with the water tower in the background. Trailhead at the opposite end. I got to practice my pole work. Trekking poles you freaks.

Tisch Mills was a beautiful segment with a weird little libertarian’s wet dream in between. I had to ford a small creek. The water was FREEZING. The second half of the segment followed the East Twin River.

Spent some time hiking along some of the beaches of Lake Michigan. It flurried almost the entire hike. Bonus pic of me and Masa, a thru hiker from Japan. He’s kind of becomes a celebrity on the trail with people leaving him trail magic (food, water, mittens) and giving him a warm place to sleep.
