Tokyo & Kyoto. Writer/editor/gardener/cook, birthing person, mother of dogs, avowed enemy of the patriarchy. I'm no damn lady. Ex-Dow Jones/MarketWatch/Reuters. Mostly harmless.

I vowed that I had officially retired from chocolate-covered banana duty at our neighborhood festivals, but...the bananas called me back.

A building far ahead of its time -- Yoyogi National Stadium, designed by Kenzo Tange for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. When Tange won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1987, the citation described the stadium as “among the most beautiful buildings of the 20th century."

I thought the pop artist Peter Max had already died years ago, but apparently, that was incorrect. However, it became correct as of this week. I found this in a box at my dad's, a while back. I believe I got this children's embroidery kit for my birthday in 1971. Far out! Groovy!

Whenever the string broke on one of my necklaces, I used to think, "I can easily restring it myself when I have time!" And then over the years, my collection of broken necklaces grew. Paying a shop to restring them for me is really worth it. Thanks again, Jewelry Opera! jewelry-opera.jimdofree.com

My weekend trip to Kyoto was far too quick, and I didn't have time to meet up with anyone but family this month. But at least I got some great Okinawan food at Goya.

“Did someone drop a wig?” Our puppy’s adult coat has grown in. As we mourn the recent loss of our elderly dog, we’re profoundly grateful that we adopted this floofy goof in June.

THINGS I WAS RECENTLY GIFTED. 1) Mystery jar! I had no idea what this was. I sampled it before I looked it up, expecting something salty...but it's coconut jam! It's apparently very popular in Singapore. I can barely restrain myself from eating all of it straight out of the jar with a spoon.

Random oddities! I found this necklace at a Tokyo flea market. It appears to be made of olive pits. The seller was offering it for 500 yen, but she cut it to 300. (She seemed eager to get rid of it. Maybe it's haunted by the ghost of someone who loved eating olives?) I wish I knew their story.

As Japan now bakes under a heat wave, I'm enjoying looking back to just a few weeks, when the temperatures were much lower and the hydrangeas were still in bloom. An old friend of mine and I spent the day in Uji. We checked out Mimurotoji (三室戸寺), which supposedly has over 20,000 hydrangea bushes.

Two weeks ago today, we began a trial adoption with this goofy little floof. We wanted to make he sure that he wouldn’t give our senior dog too much stress. Fortunately, she’s decided to completely ignore him, probably hoping he’ll just go away. He won’t, though — we’re smitten.

I love old objects from flea markets -- especially dishes. What kind of meals were once served in them? Who ate the food? And who washed the dishes afterward? Every old dish has a story I will never know. I don’t have space for more dishes, but Jewelry Opera in Jingumae has pieces made from shards.

Happy Mother's Day to all who observe it in any way. Here's a flower for everyone: an amaryllis growing in an old oil can, outside of an empty house in Higashi Azabu. I am tempted to "rescue" it, but I think it should stay where everyone walking by can enjoy it.

For @ms.now, I wrote about the Trump administration going after Smith College, a New England women's college, over allowing trans women to attend the school. The investigation not only threatens the school, but also the surrounding town, which I live in. www.ms.now/news/trump-s...

This is a sign in Higashi Azabu, Tokyo. A more accurate English translation would have been, "Be quiet at night." But every time I see it, I think about what great advice it actually is -- to try to calm oneself down before bedtime. We'd all sleep so much better if we did this!

For me, the line between Tokyo’s late winter and early spring is when this mokuten (a type of magnolia) tree in Azabudai blooms. I happened to walk past it today, and something miraculous happened: the woman who lives in the house came outside and asked me if I wanted some of its flowers!

Late last year, I took the first photo on the left — these lovely camellias were blooming next to an empty house in Higashi Azabu. I walked past it the other day, and.....it’s gone. Just GONE! I like to think that someone “rescued” it, and it’s blooming in a garden somewhere.
