Sonya Massey’s life mattered and she should be here today. The Massey family remains in my prayers.

I know this renewed attention is reopening painful wounds, and no legal proceeding can undo the loss of Sonya. In Illinois, we believe in the importance of holding people accountable. The Prisoner Review Board members' unanimous decision today is possible because of the Joe Coleman Act, part of our administration's efforts to reform the criminal legal system.

As Sonya’s family continues to navigate life without her, I’m proud of the creation of the Massey Commission that's rooted in community to repair fragmented systems in her honor.

May Sonya’s family and all who love her continue to find peace as they mourn. Say her name. Sonya Massey.
