And you said to me you hadn't been calling for it!

Oh that I do think one has to do a bit of light comparative political science (not least our closest doppelganger, France). There have been strong headwinds for centre-right parties facing further-right challengers in most places

Yes but I need to believe it will work out once she's in, as well

The way things are going with this government the Low Pay Commission may be complaining about the £100,000 cliff edge by 2029. I willingly admit I need to believe the Kemi thing will work out, but that doesn't have any bearing on whether I happen to be right or not

Also, your newspaper will endorse her at the next election

lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social @lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
All I am saying is that she is now doing something which is palpably the sort of thing you and your groupies (I'm afraid this is a fair comment) have been complaining she doesn't do

lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social @lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Ok so you think the Lib Dems should do it in opposition (to attract the voters you in general think Kemi is behindhand in seeking to attract) and you think the Tories should do it in government (a better "we're open" than the tourist VAT thing) but there's no credit to Tories for proposing it rn?

She has now done the £100,000 cliff edge policy that last week you said she should do

lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social @lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Bad news for the dozens of liberal journalists and groupies on here who have been citing Kemi's failure to propose this as definitive evidence of her fecklessness

Would also improve the (often dreadful) exhibition experience as there'd be less of a commercial imperative to maximum bums rubbing up disappointedly against the far wall

It's less paradoxical if one thinks of it as unconsciously modelling the behaviour of intelligent and sensitive person in thrall to a cult...

Replying to emails instantly is a very effective form of terrorism, and has the collateral advantage that fewer people email you (because they don't actually want a response straight away)

I think that's exactly it, your school caretaker wore one, but now members of the House of Lords and permanent secretaries wear them and some of them don't like it / don't like seeing it. A sort of trad / snob thing. I'm being strictly descriptive not normative here!

"Lanyard* isn't about white collar vs blue collar, it's people with older-school white collar sensibilities having aesthetic objections to modern office culture

I think police involvement is a reasonable line, though I accept that didn't go very far in this case

Also, to my mind, victim in the context of "not the victim here" has a subtly different valence from the one you're using

lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social @lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
I think someone improperly reported to the police is a victim---in the objective sense of having been done an injustice, however he chooses to process the fact subjectively.

There is a material difference disguised by the titles, in that Arday was elected to a professorial chair whereas O'Reilly is just a long-serving Senior Lecturer rebadged as an Associate Professor when Cambridge changed the jargon to avoid confusing Americans

The vertical drinking thing has been a feature of bureaucratic pabulum since the early 2000s, including in Westminster Council. My recent experience of the pavement outside French House is that there are no Marylebone matrons in tweed skirts and pearls waving tasers at you

lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social @lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Standing back, it seems that a new Tory council plus a change in emphasis among online progressives re urban drinking and public health (see also the reaction to the proposed Starmer pub garden smoking ban) has opened up a breathless hit job on what Westminster has been saying forever

lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social @lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Seems as if the actual draft policy *recommends* that pubs themselves discourage standing---hence why altered Guardian headline now doesn't say Westminster intends to ban standing directly.

Online funsters / yimbies are in fact perpetually complaining about the lack of late-opening fast-food options after a night out, and specifically melted down over the Leicester Square Greggs, so the McDonalds licence is not irrelevant

lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social @lstdysdiscourse.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
This broader issue has become a meme and stories that appear to reinforce it are now exaggerated and sensationalised. Everything the Guardian quotes in respect of existing pubs is framed as a recommendation; there's just a presumption against licensing more pubs. Bad enough but not the same thing

The point re yearning for a forum with an arbiter and a judgment rings very true. One thing that's very (albeit perhaps perversely) therapeutic about being a barrister is that you get to participate in that all the time, in a domain that's circumscribed and artificial but in its way extremely real

But it's not about one's abstract left-right position, its about whether one's raison d'être in the discourse is as a critic of the actually existing Conservative party. If that's one's social business model, so to speak, ones is quasi-professionally unsusceptible to being brought into the fold
