In this analysis, we look at contraceptive use dynamics across 55 countries using DHS data. We pay special attention to young people and the way that their contraceptive use patterns differ from those of older women. Use, discontinuation, and method mix all really differ! 2/4

There's lots I love about this paper, but one thing I hope people will especially appreciate is the Venn diagram in Figure 1. We use this figure to try to tease apart the points of ideological overlap and divergence between different camps in the family planning field 12/n
Venn diagram from Figure 1 from the article "Thirty years of ‘strange bedmates’: The ICPD and the nexus of population control, feminism, and family planning."

This multi-colored blue, yellow, purple, red and black diagram shows the points of ideological divergence and overlap between three camps: the anti-choice/pro-life camp, the population and development camp, and the reproductive rights camp.

The coolest postdoc I know is now accepting applications: 🧪🔬THE WITTIG POSTDOC IN FEMINIST BIOLOGY🧪🔬 Our interdisciplinary program @ UW Madison seeks to train the next generation of feminist scientists/scholars of science Please share widely and read more here: crgw.gws.wisc.edu/scholarships...
Purple and white flyer that contains the the following information:

One of the only opportunities of its kind, the Wittig Postdoctoral Fellows Program in Feminist Science offers a fellowship at the intersection of biological/biomedical sciences and feminist science studies. We aim to train the next generation of feminist scientists/feminist science scholars and cultivate an interdisciplinary community of thinkers, practitioners, and advocates. UW Madison has a distinguished history of excellence in these areas and continues to be a dynamic site of research and teaching in feminist science scholarship.

Applicants with a new or recent PhD are invited to apply for this two year, fully funded position. We welcome scholars working at the intersection of feminist scholarship and the sciences, including the life sciences, public health, history of science, science and technology studies, or medicine. Fellows will conduct original research mentored by a UW faculty member.

This research can be feminist topics within existing research programs in the life sciences (e.g., studies of sex and the variability of sex), implementing feminist methodologies in life science research, or historical, philosophical, artistic, and feminist engagements in life science research. Successful applicants will be paired with a mentor among the UW faculty who has agreed to provide guidance during the fellowship period. For a range of examples of stellar candidates, we’ve included some sample profiles below. The postdoc will also take primary responsibility for planning and executing a feminist science one-day conference.

The Wittig postdoc is administered through the Center for Research on Gender & Women (CRGW). For further information, contact the Director of the Center for Research on Gender and Women (CRGW), Christine Garlough, clgarlough@wisc.edu.

As you can see here in the (tentative! not yet finalized!) revisions to Figure 3 in the paper, demand-side unmet need continues to account for the majority of unmet need across countries, but the results are a bit less overwhelming than we originally reported

And our results kind of blew us away Counseling on every single non-IUD method went down with the PPIUD program. Counseling on: condoms ↓22 % points ; pills ↓19 % points ; implants ↓10 % points ; FABM ↓20 % points ; etc. Across the board.
100
Leigh Senderowicz @lsenderowicz.bsky.social · 12/12/2022
Women reported that their providers had told them that the PPIUD was the best method, that it didn't have any side effects at all, and other stories that strongly suggested that the PPIUD program was creating a bias in contraceptive counseling toward this single method.

But when an intervention is narrowly tailored to focus on a specific outcome of interest, and then evaluation is too, we can miss A LOT of things that really matter to us Think about the blind spots we have and what we miss when we only look for outcomes were were hoping for!
100
Leigh Senderowicz @lsenderowicz.bsky.social · 12/12/2022
So what are the outcome metrics we use to evaluate vertical programs? It's pretty simple! What was the program designed to achieve and how many of that thing did it do? For example if a program was designed to prevent HIV transmission, how many new cases of HIV did it prevent?
100
Leigh Senderowicz @lsenderowicz.bsky.social · 12/12/2022
Vertical programs are really popular among global health donors and NGOs because they allow for the targeting of specific priority areas and for shorter timelines And, because they're so much narrower in scope, it's also much easier to tell if they're working!

We look at service delivery data from Burkina Faso, the DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria & Uganda, and what we find is concerning. Necessary supplies were missing in 17%-44% of facilities. 16%-42% of facilities were unable to remove a deeply-placed implant.
100
Leigh Senderowicz @lsenderowicz.bsky.social · 28/11/2022
It's commonly acknowledged that removing implants is harder than putting them in to begin with, so making sure we're not putting in a bunch of methods that we won't be able to take out later is super important!!
