Mark's talk about independent television at the 2024 SXSW conference directly impacted us at Lowkey Moxie. We went from being met with blank stares, as people couldn't comprehend how television could be made outside the studio system, to a response that was still confused but now hopeful.

In the past few years, the Duplass Brothers have become synonymous with indie TV. Brothers @markduplass.bsky.social (The Morning Show, Backrooms) and @jayduplass.bsky.social (Dying for Sex, Transparent), got their start in indie film 30 years ago and have never forgotten their roots.

We're often asked what type of shows we'll make. Our ideas run the gamut. We're long past the age of web series where most were 2-4 characters in one location. While we won't be making Game of Thrones or Lost-level epics, character-driven story with limited locations and light VFX is on the table.

All of our shows will be signatory under the respective union's New Media contract, because we want to be able to work with the best cast and crew. And this will allow them to keep the benefits they're paying for, as well as provide opportunities for more people to become eligible to join the union.

Members need to earn a certain amount to qualify for healthcare, and many union members have, or will soon, find themselves without it, even people who have been in the guild for decades and have won Oscars and Emmys. And the 2026 contracts have made eligibility even harder for most unions.

Union busting doesn't just mean dismantling. It's hard to protect workers' rights when there are no jobs for workers. The past few years, guild members have had to look elsewhere for work, while still paying thousands in dues to remain in their union.
