Happy National Public Lands Day! Here are scenes from my week (well, a couple weeks). Public lands played a key role.

I've long suspected that capitalism would destroy civilization, but I assumed it would be in more abstract ways than tech-bro capitalists creating tech that will destroy us, and then ignoring warnings, all because said tech is making them money right now...

I find it hard to express just how much I love public lands. I encourage you to go enjoy them; bonus points if you fight to keep public lands in public hands. (Not for nothing, voting is a good place to start…) Photo from Staunton State Park this afternoon.

What you see when you access Google Maps from the US vs. Canada. (I use a VPN. First image is from Maps using a Chicago server; second images is using a Vancouver server, which still shows Lake Ontario.)

I don’t take it for granted that I can visit this amazing place whenever I want, and at no cost. Amazing, overall, but even more amazing because, though Charles Perkins told his children he wanted the land to be free to everyone, he never put that in writing. (Also, go visit your public lands!)
A placard on a rock in Garden of the Gods that commemorates the Perkins family’s gift of the land to the City of Colorado Springs. It reads: “The Garden of the Gods given to the City of Colorado Springs in 1909 by the children of Charles Elliott Perkins in fulfillment of his wish that it be kept forever free to the public.”

June 24 is ENS Sign Awareness Day. If your car ever becomes stuck on railroad tracks, get out of the vehicle and look for a blue sign near the crossing. By calling the phone number and relaying the information on the sign, the railroad company will be able to stop trains until your car is removed.

When built in the early 1900s, this house in Colorado Springs’ Patty Jewett neighborhood was awarded by the city’s newspaper to the employee who sold the most subscriptions. (A cool piece of history, but man, talk about the heyday of newspapers.)

A commuter bus and fire truck responding to a call had an unfortunate meeting in downtown Colorado Springs today. A CSPD officer said there were multiple injuries to people in both vehicles, but that none that were life threatening.

Here, Tesla constructed the largest Tesla coil ever built and experimented with sending a wireless signal from Pikes Peak to Paris, France. It's not known if he succeeded and he left Colorado Springs in 1900. A plaque was placed in nearby Memorial Park in 2017 to commemorate Tesla's time in town.
A photo showing a plaque in the grass of Memorial Park with four pine trees behind it. A photo showing a plaque honoring Nikola Tesla. In part, it reads, "The Tesla Experimental Station was a Laboratory built by Nikola Tesla in 1899 on an empty site on Knob Hillin Colorado Springs. The experimental lab stood north of this location on North Foote Avenue. The lab was operational from May 1899 to January 1900. The Tesla Experimental Station possessed the largest Tesla coil ever built, over 49 feet in diameter. This coil reproduced the effects of lightning and its accompanying thunder. The lab's primary purpose was to conduct experiments with high frequency electricity, research into wireless transmission of electrical power, and attempts to send a signal from Pikes Peak to Paris, France."

Nikola Tesla in 1899 built the Tesla Experimental Station in Colorado Springs where this Knob Hill house is today. He chose the spot because of its clear view of Pikes Peak (ironically not visible today when I took these photos).
A photo of a ranch-style house partiually blocked by two trees, one green and one red. A photo of a ranch-style house. Behind it, fog obscures the view of Pikes Peak.
